Dublin Merchants

In 1870 documents of the Anglo-Normans in Ireland from 1172 to 1320, edited by J. T. Gilbert, Secretary of the Public Record Office of Ireland, were printed in the Rerum Britannicarum Medii Aevi Scriptores series. Liberate Rolls
(1240-1245)
These chancery liberate rolls of the 25th to 29th years of the reign of Henry III of England record the details of payments and allowances as part of the administration of government. Most entries start with the Latin words 'liberate', meaning 'deliver', or 'allocate', meaning allow. There are also 'contrabreves', warrants mainly to sheriffs of shires, assigning them tasks and allowing expenses. Most of the entries relate to England and Wales, but there are occasional references to Ireland and the English possessions in France.ALOWE. Cost: £4.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

Assizes on the Channel Islands

John de Fressingfeld, John de Ditton, William Russel and Drogo de Barentin, royal justices in eyre (itinerant) visited the Channel Islands in the 2nd year of the reign of king Edward II, and heard civil and criminal cases. Their assize roll was edited for the Societe Jersiaise and published in 1903, with expanded Latin text facing an English translation. There are common pleas, crown pleas, gaol delivery and quo warranto for Guernsey and Jersey (separately), as well as pleas heard on Sark, and crown pleas on Alderney.

Inhabitants of Suffolk

The lay subsidy granted by Act of Parliament in 1523 was a tax on the laymen (as opposed to clergy), levied on householders, landowners, those possessing moveable goods worth £1 or more, and all workmen aged 16 or over earning £1 or more per annum. Real estate was taxed at a shilling in the pound; moveable goods worth £1 to £2 at fourpence a pound; £2 to £20 at sixpence a pound; and over £20 at a shilling in the pound. Wages were taxed at fourpence in the pound. Aliens were charged double; aliens not chargeable in the above categories had to pay a poll tax of eightpence. The records of the assessment for the county of Suffolk, mostly made in 1524, survive in 64 rolls in the National Archives. From 42 of these a compilation for the whole shire was printed in 1910 as Suffolk Green Book x. This includes a list of defaulters of 1526 and a subsidy roll of 1534 for Bury St Edmunds.ALOWE.
