These chancery liberate rolls of the 30th to 35th years of the reign of Henry III of England record the details of payments and allowances as part of the administration of government. Most entries start with the Latin words 'liberate', meaning 'deliver', or 'allocate', meaning allow. There are also 'contrabreves', warrants mainly to sheriffs of shires, assigning them tasks and allowing expenses. | Inhabitants of Salisbury

A collection of transcripts of churchwardens' accounts from the parishes of St Edmund and St Thomas in Sarum (Salisbury in Wiltshire) by Henry James Fowle Swayne, the Recorder of Wilton, was published by the Wilts Record Society in 1896. The greater part of these accounts relate to expenditure to workmen on the church fabric, and income for rent of pews and the tolling of bells and obsequies for parishioners. There are several sources covered: the churchwardens' accounts for St Edmund's for 1443 to 1461; for St Thomas's 1545 to 1690, and some notes from 1704; and accounts of the stewards of the Fraternity of Jesus Mass founded in St Edmund's.BAGENT. | Merchant Seamen

The Registry of Merchant Seamen, including fishermen, sought to identify individuals securely in this series of registers by assigning to each man a unique number, grouped together by surname, and then by christian name, whereas in previous registers names had been jumbled together under the first two letters of the surname. Each man's age and birthplace was recorded, together with any number brought forwards from previous registration, i. e. the number assigned to the man in the registers for 1835 to 1840. Then each voyage is listed, with his status (e. g. S for seaman, M for mate, &c.) on that trip, the identification number of the ship, the date, and then the name of the ship. In the event of it becoming known that a man had died during the course of a voyage, that information is written across the remaining empty columns. BT 112/3.BAGENT. | Outstanding soldiers of the King's Royal Rifles

Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The rifle depot was at Gosport. The corps had four line battalions. The 1st battalion returned from Halifax, Nova Scotia, 2 January 1877, and was based at Limerick; it embarked for India 25 November 1890, and was stationed at Peshawar. The 2nd battalion returned from Bengal in 1882, and by 1885 was at Devonport; it embarked for Gibraltar 1 December 1891, and in 1895 was on Malta. The 3rd battalion embarked for Natal 19 February 1879, and in 1885 was on Cyprus; it returned from Gibraltar to England in December 1891, and in 1895 was at Shorncliffe. The 4th battalion embarked for India 2 November 1876, and in 1885 was at Ferozepore; it returned from India 4 December 1892, and in 1895 was at Dover. During the period of these records the corps fought in the Boer war (1881), the Egyptian war (1882) ("Egypt, 1882", "Tel-el-Kebir"), the Soudan campaign (1884: El Teb and Temai) ("Egypt, 1884"), the Hazara, Miranzai and Burmese expeditions (1890-1891), the Chitral relief force (1895) ("Chitral"), and the South African war (1899-1902: Talana, Rietfontein, Lombard's Kop, defence and relief of Ladysmith, Colenso, Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz, Pieter's Hill, Laing's Nek, Belfast and Lydenburg) ("South Africa, 1900-1902", "Defence of Ladysmith", "Relief of Ladysmith").BAGENT.
