The siege of Colchester was one of the most severe of the Civil War, and lasted from 14 June to 28 August 1648. Kent and Essex Royalists on their way into Norfolk and Suffolk turned aside into Colchester, hoping to get recruits there. Fairfax pursued from his headquarters in London, and when on 12 June he appeared with 5,000 men they were obliged to make hasty preparations for defence. The town was ill-fitted to stand a siege, and the 4,000 Royalist troops were most of them newly levied and ill-armed, but after a repulse on 14 June 14, Fairfax realized that a long siege was inevitable, and busied himself with raising forts to completely isolate the town. On 2 July the work of circumvallation was finished, and though meeting with fierce resistance, Fairfax gained post after post. Early in August famine added to the misery of the besieged, and the citizens began to clamour for surrender. On 19 August, Norwich, the Royalist leader, asked for terms; negotiations went on for some days, and finally on 28 August, Fairfax occupied the town. Three of the Royalist leaders were shot, and the soldiers were sent to labour in the West Indies, or to enforced military service under the Venetian Republic. The townsmen were made to pay a heavy fine.
These accounts list disbursements to workmen digging the fortifications and to artificers, soldiers and officers involved in the siege. The total sum paid was about £1,695.

| Early settlers of Connecticut
(1636-1665)
The colony of Connecticut was settled in 1633 by emigrants from Massachusetts. The modern state of Connecticut also includes the colony of Newhaven. The seat of government of Connecticut was established in 1635 at Newtown (Hartford), on the site of a Dutch fort. The first volume of the Connecticut colony records is in three parts: 1, the records of the General and Particular Courts from April 1636 to December 1649; 2, Copy wills and probate inventories; 3, Grants and Conveyances of Lands, mostly from 1662 to 1690. The second volume of the records contains the minutes of the General Court from February 1650 to October 1669. In accordance with a resolution of the General Assembly, J. Hammond Trumbull transcribed the whole of the surviving court records as far as May 1665 (the union with Newhaven colony), with the probate material from 1640 to 1649, and these were published as 'The Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut' in 1850.BELDEN. The minutes of the 'General Assembly of the Governor and Company of His Majesty's English Colony of Connecticut in New England in America' from page 447 to the end of volume IX, and pages 1 to 310 of volume X, transcribed and edoted by Charles J. Hoadly, State Librarian, were printed at Hartford in 1881. The record of each assembly commences with a list of officers, and of the representatives or deputies of the freemen of the several towns in the colony. There are then elections and appointments of officers for the ensuing year, including justices of the peace for each county; general enactments; and then the results of deliberations on private petitions.BELDEN. | Boys entering Dover College

The second edition of the Dover College Register, edited by William Stevens Lee, lists all boys entering the school from its opening in 1871 to the date of publication in 1899. The boys are listed alphabetically by term of entry, surname and full christian names. A double dagger after the name indicates a school prefect. Next comes the year or date of birth, then abbreviations indicating house - [D] day boy; [Sch.] School House; [Sp.] Sparke's House; [St.] Steedman's House; [W.] Walters' from 1881 to 1886, Williams' from 2nd term 1890 to 3rd term 1898; [L.] Littlewood's (the same house as Walters') fom 3rd term 1886 to 1st term 1890. From 3rd term of 1892 onwards the names were changed to [S.] School House; [P.] Priory House (was Sparke's); [M.] St Martin's (was Williams'). Moreover, in January 1893 the Junior School was established at West Mount, and from then onwards [J] indicates a period there. Next come distinctions gained in the school, exhibitions, &c., and athletic distinctions, such as XI for membership of the school cricket eleven, XV for the school football team, with years; then date of leaving; distinctions gained since leaving; and present address (where known) as of 1899. Despite this attempt at comprehensive coverage, the materials to hand for compiling the register were often lacking: at worst, in the early years, there are a handful of entries where only the surname is given.
