Masters of Apprentices registered in Norfolk (1777) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. Merchant Seamen (1840-1844) The Registry of Merchant Seamen, including fishermen, sought to identify individuals securely in this series of registers by assigning to each man a unique number, grouped together by surname, and then by christian name, whereas in previous registers names had been jumbled together under the first two letters of the surname. Each man's age and birthplace was recorded, together with any number brought forwards from previous registration, i. e. the number assigned to the man in the registers for 1835 to 1840. Then each voyage is listed, with his status (e. g. S for seaman, M for mate, &c.) on that trip, the identification number of the ship, the date, and then the name of the ship. In the event of it becoming known that a man had died during the course of a voyage, that information is written across the remaining empty columns. Men of the 43rd Regiment who fought in the New Zealand War (1866-1870) New Zealand War Medal roll for the 43rd (Monmouthshire Light Infantry) Regiment of Foot: for service in the New Zealand campaign 1866 to 1867: the rolls were compiled following a general order in 1869 and the medals were distributed in 1870. Naturalizations (1904) The Home Office issued monthly lists of aliens to whom Certificates of Naturalization or Readmission to British Nationality had been granted by the Secretary of State under the provisions of 33 Vic. cap. 14 and been registered in the Home Office pursuant to the act during each previous month. These notices, from January to December 1904, refer to naturalizations from December 1903 to November 1904. British Palestine: Business Partners (1934) Official announcements of the British administration in Palestine were issued, By Authority, in the weekly Palestine Gazette. These include registration of business partnerships. The details are set out in the form: 1. Names and addresses of partners; 2. Firm name of partnership; 3. Names of partners authorised to administer the partnership and to sign for it; 4. Date of commencement and determination; 5. Object. Aviators' Certificates (1952) Lists of certificates granted by the Royal Aero Club of the United Kingdom to newly-qualified aviators of powered aircraft: giving certificate number, full name, and name of his or her aero club, R.A.F. station, &c. Certificate numbers 27783 to 28078, issued from 30 November 1951 to 19 June 1952. This system of certification ended 24 March 1952, being replaced by pilots' certificates, in four classes. BRISK. Covering a large area around Liverpool, the directory includes Bootle, Birkenhead and Wallasey, and thus the populous areas of southwest Lancashire and of the Wirral peninsula of Cheshire. BRISK.
