Masters of Merchantmen (1852-1853) Lloyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping was issued annually, listing ships that had been surveyed preparatory to being insured. This is the register issued 1 July 1852 and then annotated as ships were re-surveyed through to 30 June 1853. The ships were numbered by the first letter of their name, and then by number alphabetically through the ships' names and within ships of the same name alphabetically by surname of the master. After the name of the ship there is the type of vessel (Bk, barque; Bg, brig; Bn, brigantine; Cr, cutter; Dr, dogger; G, galliott; H, hoy; K, ketch; Lr, lugger; Pol, polacre; S, ship; Sk, smack; Sp, sloop; Sr, schooner; St, schoot; Stm, steamer; Sw, snow; Yt, yacht), master's name (as at the time of the last survey); tonnage; place and year of build; owners; port belonging to; destined voyage; number of years first assigned; and character for hull and stores (e. g., A 1), with the year or month (e. g., 50 for 1850, or 2 for February 1852) of inspection. Underneath some entries details were given of construction and repair, with year - s., sheathed; d., doubled; C., coppered; I. B., iron bolts; c. f., copper fastened; M., sheathed with marine metal; Y. M., sheathed with yellow metal; G., sheathed with galvanised iron; Z., sheathed with zinc; F., felt; C. lm., coppered to light water or ballast mark; C. T., copper bolts substituted for treenails; Cl., clincher; len., lengthened; lrp., large repairs; trp., thorough repairs; Drp., damage repaired; ND., new deck; N TSds., new top-sides; W. The sample scan is from the main list. The third column, reserved for masters' names, is not particularly wide; with short surnames, an initial will be given; but longer surnames omit the initials, and even longer surnames are abbreviated. This is the index to masters in the main list. Often new masters had been appointed by the time of re-survey, and their names are added in slightly smaller type under the original master's names in the third column. These new masters are also included in this index. It should be borne in mind that the masters in the main list are those at the time of the respective previous survey for each ship, not necessarily as of 1 July 1852. HAMANN. Cost: £6.00. Naturalizations (1920) The Home Office issued monthly lists of aliens to whom Certificates of Naturalization or Readmission to British Nationality had been granted by the Secretary of State and whose oaths of allegiance had been registered in the Home Office. These notices, from January to December 1920, refer to naturalizations from December 1919 to November 1920. The lists give full name, surname first; country of origin; date of taking the oath of allegiance; place of residence; and occupation. A dagger indicates re-admission to British nationality. HAMANN. Pianists (1929) The Calendar of the Trinity College of Music, London, for the year 1929 includes lists of licentiates and associates including these musicians. Surnames and initials are given; but women are distinguished by having their (first) christian name stated. The college provided instruction to nearly 1000 students a year, with examinations of 66,000 candidates a year at 700 local centres throughout the world. HAMANN. Cost: £4.00. London Telephone Subscribers (1939) The London telephone directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the L to Z directory issued in May 1939, but also contains some names from earlier in the alphabet, for instance in the separate section for midwives. The London telephone districts comprised not only the city centre, but also the very extensive suburbs in the Home Counties (Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex). HAMANN. Cost: £4.00. Structural Engineers (M. I. STRUCT. E.) (1953) The Institution of Structural Engineers was founded in 1908 and incorporated by royal charter in 1934. The institution had nine branches in Britain and Northern Ireland, and one in South Africa. The 1953 year book includes this list of members corrected to 1 August 1953, giving year of election to the various grades, surname (in bold), christian name, honours, address, and telephone number. 'Members shall be persons elected as such who, either (a) having attained the age of not less than thirty years and passed an examination qualifying for Associate-Membership and subsequent to this have been engaged for at least five years in a position of responsibility for the design or execution of important structural engineering work; or (b) having attained the age of not less than forty years and being engaged in the profession of structural engineering shall have had at least fifteen years' employment in positions of responsibility for the design or execution of important structural engineering work and shall have acquired a considerable degree of eminence as a structural engineer.'
