Masters of Apprentices registered at Leicester (1728-1731) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. Nottinghamshire Marriage Licences (1701-1753) Nottingham Archdeaconry, which was almost coextensive with the county of Nottingham, lay in the diocese and province of York, but it had substantially independent jurisdiction for both probate and the issuing of marriage licences. These are abstracts of the archdeaconry marriage licences: they usually state the groom's address, occupation, age, and condition; the bride's address, age and condition; and the names of the churches or parishes at which it was intended the marriage would be celebrated. Not all licences led to marriages. Where the age given is 21, it should be construed as '21 or over'. There was no obligation for the marriage to take place at the parish suggested, but the licence would only be valid within the county. These abstracts have been annotated with extra information found on the marriage bonds. 26 Nottinghamshire parishes (Beckingham, Darlton, Dunham, Eaton, North Leverton, Ragnall, Rampton, South Wheatley, Cropwell Bishop, Bleasby, Blidworth, Calverton, Caunton, Edingley, Farnsfield, Halloughton, Holme, Kirklington, Morton, North Muskham, Norwell, Oxton, South Muskham, Southwell, Upton and Woodborough) lay within the small peculiar jurisdiction of Southwell, which issued its own licences: abstracts of these for the period 1755 to 1833 are also included here. Shareholders of the National Provincial Bank of England (1838) The provincial banks of England and Wales made annual returns to the Stamp Office of their proprietors or shareholders. These returns, registered in March 1838, from the 103 banks then in existence, contain the full names and addresses of nearly 30,000 shareholders. This bank had branches at Aberystwyth, Amlwch, Barnstaple, Bath, Bideford, Birmingham, Boston, Brecon, Bristol, Bury St Edmunds, Cardiff, Cheltenham, Darlington, Dolgelly, Dursley, Exeter, Gloucester, Hereford, Honiton, Ilfracombe, Ipswich, Kingsbridge, Leicester, Lichfield, Manchester, Plymouth, Pwllheli, Ramsgate, Rugby, Stockton, South Molton, Tiverton, Tamworth, Wisbech, Wem, Worcester, Wotton, Whitchurch (Salop) and Yarmouth (Norfolk). Members of the Phonographic Corresponding Society (1845) The Phonotypic Journal, published weekly, contains lists of new members of the Phonographic Corresponding Society, alterations (such as changes of address), and lists of contributions to the Phonographic Reformation Fund. The lists of new members give full name (surname first) and address. Members of the society agreed to correct the lessons of phonographic pupils through the post gratuitously: a duty not, however, incumbent on honorary members, marked in these lists with an asterisk. Railway Subscription Contracts (1846) �121,255,374 0s 8d was promised by about 8,000 subscribers of more than �2,000 to the nearly 556 railway bills deposited in the Private Bill Office during the Session of Parliament for 1846. This alphabetical list gives the full names of the subscribers (surname first), description (i. e., occupation), place of abode, a numerical reference to the title of the railway, the amount subscribed to each, and total. Inhabitants of Newington in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St Mary Newington, Surrey, registration district: St Peter Walworth sub-district: enumeration district 21: described as: "All that Part of the Parish of St. Mary Newington, which Comprises South St. (East side), Ann St. (North side), Anns Row, Thurlow Place to Ann St., Aylesbury St. (both sides), Hen & Chicken Lane from the Hen & Chickens to East St. (both sides) Including James Place, and Victory Place, South side of East St. from Hen & Chicken Lane to Parish boundary, Surrey Square, Including Claremont Place and Crawleys Cottages." This area lay in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth, and in the borough of Lambeth. HO 107/1567.
