There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. | Tradesmen of Chester
(1392-1805)
Lists of admissions of freemen of the city of Chester from the earliest surviving records to 1805 were compiled by J. H. E. Bennett and published by the Lancashire and Cheshire Record Society from 1906. These lists were extracted from the mayoral yearbooks (dating back to 1392) and twelve freemen's rolls covering 1538 to 1612 and 1636 to 1805; and a list of admissions for 1505-1506 in Harleian MS 2105 (British Library). The record does not become more or less continuous until about 1490: in all, 12,426 freedoms are recorded. Freedom of the city, necessary to practise a trade in the city, could be obtained by birth (in which case the father's name and occupation are usually given); by apprenticeship to a freeman (the master's name and occupation being given); or by order of assembly. Both the freemen and the masters listed are indexed here. The main abbreviations used are: B, freedom taken up by right of birth; I, freedom taken up by right of indenture; M. | Essex Freeholders: Hinckford hundred

The poll of the freeholders of Essex at the election of a knight of the shire to serve in Parliament, taken at Chelmsford 31 January 1810 and fourteen following days (Sundays excepted). The candidates were John Archer Houblon esquire and Montagu Burgoyne esquire. This poll book gives the names of the voters arranged by initial letter of surname division by division. The freeholders' full names are stated, surname first, residence (often elsewhere), and place where the freehold lay. The right hand column records their votes. The qualification for suffrage in the counties was the possession of a freehold estate worth more than 40s a year. The electoral divisions comprised these hundreds: I. Barstable and Chafford; II. Becontree and Waltham; III. Chelmsford; IV. Hinckford; V. Tendring; VI. Uttleford, Clavering and Dunmow; VII. Harlow, Ongar and Freshwell; VIII. Lexden, Colchester and Witham; IX. Rochford and Thurstable; X. Dengie and Winstree. Hinckford hundred includes Braintree and Halstead.

| Agriculturalists in southern England

'A Natural and Chymical Treatise of Agriculture, from the Works of Count Gustavus Adolphus Gyllenborg; with Practical Remarks and Additions: by W. Pilkinton, Land Surveyor, Valuer of Estates, and Late Secretary to the East Devon Agricultural Society', was published in Banbury in 1823, having been subscribed to in advance by over 2000 farmers and gentlemen, mainly from the southern counties, doubtless anxious to discover the secrets of Gyllenborg's new techniques for improving crop yields.

The return of persons committed under the Vagrant Laws to the Prisons and Houses of Correction in Essex includes this list of vagrants committed to the House of Correction at Chelmsford. Full names are given, with a brief description of the acts of vagrancy, such as wandering abroad, begging, prostitution, abandoning family, idle and disorderly, &c. | Maldon Poll: Voters Resident in Maldon and the country
(1826)
On 7 June 1826 and the fourteen following days (Sundays excepted) a poll was held to elect Members of Parliament to represent the borough of Maldon in Essex. The candidates were the Hon. George Mark Arthur Way Allanson Winn (W) of Warley Lodge, who received 1747 votes; Thomas Barrett Lennard (L) esquire of Regent's Park, London, 1454 (or 1455) votes; and Quintin Dick (D) esquire of Curson Street, London, 1401. In all 3113 electors were polled, 2527 living in Maldon and the country, 586 in London and its environs. This poll book is divided into two sections, the 586 voters from London &c being listed separately. The names are listed alphabetically by surname, then christian name(s), occupation (in italics), address; and the right-hand column shows the votes cast. Those who did not vote are not listed.KETLEY.
