Court rolls of manors held by Durham priory (1296-1384) The cathedral priory of Benedictines (black monks) of St Cuthbert at Durham possessed many manors in the county. These were administered by halmotes, or manor courts, held in three sessions (tourns or turns) each year (here marked I., II. and III.), before the terrar (obedientiary), steward, bursar, and/or the prior himself. The court rolls recording proceedings in these courts survive from 1296, 1300, 1309, and from 1333, but with years missing, until becoming fairly continuous from 1365 onwards. Extracts from the rolls from 1296 to 1384 were edited by John Booth and published by the Surtees Society in 1886. The manors under this jurisdiction were Aycliffe, Bellasis, (Newton) Bewley, Billingham, Burdun, Chilton, Coupon, Dalton, Edmondbyers, Ferry (Hill, or Ferrycliffe), Fulwell, Harton, Hebburn, Hedworth, Hesledon, Heworth, Jarrow, Kirk Merrington, East Merrington, West Merrington and Mid Merrington, Monkton, Moorsley, Newton Ketton, Nunstanton, North and South Pittington, East and West Rainton, Ravensflat, Shields, Southwick, Spen, Usworth, Wallsend, Wardley, Wearmouth, Westoe, Willington and Wolviston. The main contents of the records are demises of land held by the bond tenants, neifs, cotmen and others, and of the demesne lands; and bye-laws and pains (penalties) for breach of these; and other minor delinquencies. Normally, when a farm, cottage or piece of land was let to a new tenant, the name of the last tenant is also given, as well as the amount of the rent, and the amount of the gersum (fine on entry). These court rolls contain some of the only surviving evidence for the inhabitants of these townships in this period: but this publication was of extracts, and was not comprehensive. It should also be noted that the third tourn each year (III.) usually took place in January to March, and so by modern dating in the following year. Inhabitants of Southwark in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St George the Martyr, Southwark, registration district: London Road sub-district: enumeration district 8: described as: "Saint George's Road, commencing at Beer Shop 'Turnpike Gate', to the Butcher's Shop corner of Marshall Street (both inclusive) - Nelson Place - Princess Street (both sides) Princess Court - Mash Court - Union Court - Lynn Street & Court - Gaywood St & Court." This area lay in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark, ecclesiastical district of St Jude. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 24 Gaywood Street, 1 to 6 Gaywood Court, 1 to 12 Lynn Street, 1 to 8 Lynn Court, 1 to 22 Princes Street, 1 to 10 Princes Court, 1 to 15 Mash Court, 1 to 6 Union Court, 1 to 7 Nelson Place, and 68 to 103 St Georges Road. Scottish Partnerships Dissolved &c. (1851) Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of sequestrations of Scottish bankrupts' estates, and partnerships dissolved. Medical Practitioners in London (1926) The Medical Directory was split into several sections. The London section covered all medical practitioners resident within the London postal district. Each year a schedule was sent to each doctor to be returned to the publishers, so as to keep the directory up to date. In the directory the doctor's name is given first, in bold, surname first, in capitals; then current address. Next are the qualifications; the italic abbreviations in parentheses following the qualifications indicate the medical school at which they were gained. Then there is a list of posts and honours within the profession, starting with those then current; previous posts are preceded by the word 'late'. Surgeons (1928) The Royal College of Surgeons, established by royal charters, issued this calendar 1 August 1928, including official lists of all its fellows, members, licentiates and diplomates. The register of fellows gives full name (surname first) and address (in italics), with dates of admission as fellow and member. The list of members gives year of admission, full name (surname first) and town or country of residence. The lists of licentiates give year of admission and full name, but no indication of current address: entries of fellows of the college are prefixed with a double dagger, those of members with an asterisk. The lists of diplomates give year of admission and full name (surname first), with those diplomates who were neither members nor fellows of the college indicated with a dagger. Scientific Poultry Breeders (1932) The Scientific Poultry Breeders Association was by far the largest poultry society in Great Britain, with 16,109 members for the year 1930-1931.
