Worcestershire Inhabitants (1327) The Worcestershire Lay Subsidy roll of the 1st year of king Edward III lists lay inhabitants of each township of the shire and of the five boroughs of Droitwich (Wych), Dudley, Evesham, Kidderminster and Worcester, with the amount of tax payable by each. Licences for marriages in southern England (1632-1714) The province or archbishopric of Canterbury covered all England and Wales except for the northern counties in the four dioceses of the archbishopric of York (York, Durham, Chester and Carlisle). Marriage licences were generally issued by the local dioceses, but above them was the jurisdiction of the archbishop. Where the prospective bride and groom were from different dioceses it would be expected that they obtain a licence from the archbishop; in practice, the archbishop residing at Lambeth, and the actual offices of the province being in London, which was itself split into myriad ecclesiastical jurisdictions, and spilled into adjoining dioceses, this facility was particularly resorted to by couples from London and the home counties, although there are quite a few entries referring to parties from further afield. Three calendars of licences issued by the Faculty Office of the archbishop were edited by George A Cokayne (Clarenceux King of Arms) and Edward Alexander Fry and printed as part of the Index Library by the British Record Society Ltd in 1905. The first calendar is from 14 October 1632 to 31 October 1695 (pp. 1 to 132); the second calendar (awkwardly called Calendar No. 1) runs from November 1695 to December 1706 (132-225); the third (Calendar No. 2) from January 1707 to December 1721, but was transcribed only to the death of queen Anne, 1 August 1714. The calendars give only the dates and the full names of both parties. Where the corresponding marriage allegations had been printed in abstract by colonel Joseph Lemuel Chester in volume xxiv of the Harleian Society (1886), an asterisk is put by the entry in this publication. Dominica Slave Owners (1838) Slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire by act of Parliament in 1833. This list, published in 1838, gives details of compensation paid to owners who had suffered by the emancipation of their slaves after abolition. The table gives the date of the award, the number of the claim, the full name of the party to whom payment was awarded, the number of slaves, and the sum paid. Few masters had owned more than 100 slaves; most of the claimants had only a few. The cost of the loss of a single slave was generally assessed at about Ł20. There were 1030 claims from Dominica, including some that were abandoned, disallowed, or still unsettled because of litigation. MATTER. Cost: £8.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Inhabitants of Newington in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St Mary Newington, Surrey, registration district: St Peter Walworth sub-district: enumeration district 20: described as: "All that Part of the Parish of St. Mary Newington, which Comprises George St. (both sides), Richmond St. (East side), East St. (south side) to Pleasant Place, Including Pleasant Place, Belgrade Place (both sides) & Nottingham Walk". This area lay in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth, and in the borough of Lambeth. HO 107/1567. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 40 and 60 to 62 George Street (including Pear Tree Cottage and Trafalgar Cottage); 1 to 22 Richmond Street (including Richmond Cottage); 3 Little George Street; 1 to 10 East Street; 1 to 4 Pleasant Row (including White Cottage); 1 to 16 Belgrave (Belgrade) Place; Brights Cottage; 1 to 3 East Lane; Southampton Cottage; 2 to 3 Sandford Row; and 1 Sandford Cottages. London Telephone Subscribers (1939) The London telephone directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the L to Z directory issued in May 1939, but also contains some names from earlier in the alphabet, for instance in the separate section for midwives. The London telephone districts comprised not only the city centre, but also the very extensive suburbs in the Home Counties (Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex). MATTER. Cost: £4.00. Bristol Area Telephone Subscribers (1957) The Post Office Bristol Area Telephone Directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the directory issued in December 1957.
