| Dominica Slave Owners (1838)
Slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire by act of Parliament in 1833. This list, published in 1838, gives details of compensation paid to owners who had suffered by the emancipation of their slaves after abolition. The table gives the date of the award, the number of the claim, the full name of the party to whom payment was awarded, the number of slaves, and the sum paid. Few masters had owned more than 100 slaves; most of the claimants had only a few. The cost of the loss of a single slave was generally assessed at about £20. There were 1030 claims from Dominica, including some that were abandoned, disallowed, or still unsettled because of litigation.

The Horticultural Directory and Year Book was published for 57 years by the proprietors of the Journal of Horticulture, but for 1917 it was acquired by the Gardeners' Chronicle, and a complete revision was undertaken. 'In order to ensure the accuracy of the entries, enquiries were sent to every one of the many thousand persons whose names appeared in the lists. Nor did the work cease there, for in cases where no reply was received, a second enquiry, and in some instances even a third, was sent out. Inasmuch as the War has called many gardeners from their normal avocations, it was not possible to obtain information with respect to all the changes which occurred during the year, and particularly during the closing months. It became necessary, therefore, either to go to press with a certain number of unverified entries or to omit them altogether. After careful consideration, the latter course was adopted, and every unverified entry has been omitted.'

| Doctors in Scotland

The Medical Directory was split into several sections. This section covered all medical practitioners resident in Scotland. Each year a schedule was sent to each doctor to be returned to the publishers, so as to keep the directory up to date. In the directory the doctor's name is given first, in bold, surname first, in capitals; then current address. Next are the qualifications; the italic abbreviations in parentheses following the qualifications indicate the medical school at which they were gained. Then there is a list of posts and honours within the profession, starting with those then current; previous posts are preceded by the word 'late'. Laurel Bank School for girls was opened near Glasgow University in 1903 by two Scottish women graduates. For the half-centenary celebrations in 1953 a history of the school was published, including this 'Who's Who' of old girls, compiled by Mrs Christine White. The names are listed alphabetically by surname and christian name (in capitals), with married surnames in brackets; dates at school; degrees or awards; career, and war service (War); children (Ch.); grandchildren (G.ch.); present occupation (Occ.); and address. The Navy List for 1957, corrected to 18 January 1957, includes this alphabetical catalogue of 'Officers on the Active List of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and other Naval Volunteer Reserves'. The first column gives surname and initials, with name of ship, or CCF for Combined Cadet Force, or SCC for Sea Cadet Corps, in square brackets, and in round brackets if in the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RAN), Royal Marine Forces Volunteer Reserve (RMFVR), Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNZN), Hong Kong Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (Hg Kg), Fiji Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (Fiji), Indian Naval Volunteer Reserve (IN), South African Naval Forces (SA), Pakistan Naval Volunteer Reserve (PN), East Africa Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (EA), Mauritius Naval Volunteer Reserve (Maur), Malayan Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (Mala), Royal Ceylon Volunteer Naval Reserve (RCyN), or Sierra Leone Naval Volunteer Reserve (Sa Ln). The second column is rank, with a profusion of abbreviations, most of which are self-evident, often qualified by a specialisation, in brackets. The third column is division in which serving; and the fourth column date of seniority (in italics for officers holding temporary commissions).
