Medical Men (1853) The British Medical Directory for England, Scotland, and Wales of 1853 lists doctors, physicians, surgeons and other medical men. Each entry gives full name, surname first; address; qualifications; public appointments; and (where appropriate) a list of books and of works published in medical journals. MCGREAL. Cost: £4.00. British infantry fighting in China (1856-1860) The China Medal was awarded to soldiers and sailors who took part in the prosecution of the war against the Chinese from 1856 to 1860. Separate clasps were awarded for men who had been in receipt of the China Medal of 1842; for being actually present at Canton on 28 and 29 December 1857, when that city was bombarded and finally captured; for being actually engaged in the operations which ceased with the first capture of the Taku Forts, 20 May 1858, and led to the Treaty of Tientsin; for being actually present at the capture of the Taku Forts 21 August 1860; and for being actually present before Pekin the day the gate of that city was given up to the allied (British and French) army, viz. on 13 October 1860. The 67th (The South Hampshire) Regiment of Foot, based at Athlone, embarked for India 18 September 1858, and was transferred to China in 1859, taking part in the capture of the Taku Forts and Pekin, and the operations against the Taiping rebels in 1862 to 1863: the right wing was moved to Japan in 1864 for the occupation of Yokohama. Outstanding soldiers of the British Army Hospital Corps (1875-1881) Each year the best soldiers were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the 34th foot). Long-Lost Relatives: Home Inquiries (1900) Each issue of Lloyd's Weekly News, of London, contained a column devoted to searches for Long-Lost Relatives. The inquiries were arranged in three groups: Home Inquiries (i. e., from correspondents in the United Kingdom); Colonial and Foreign Inquiries (from abroad); and Soldiers' and Sailors' Inquiries. Results from all these were grouped together as 'Answers to Inquiries'. Each column was headed: 'Correspondents MUST give full addresses and the DATES OF THE INQUIRIES to which they refer. We cannot search back numbers, nor print inquiries for "missing husbands." These columns are not intended for inquiries in respect to claimants for money, and no agents, at home or abroad, have any connection with Lloyd's.' MCGREAL. Cost: £6.00. Outstanding soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment (1881-1901) Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 18th Regimental District - Clonmel. The 1st battalion embarked for Malta in January 1872: by 1881 it was in Bengal, and was in 1884 transferred to Egypt, taking part in the Nile Expedition and adding "Egypt, 1882", "Tel-el-Kebir" and "Nile, 1884-1885" to the regimental honours, returning 9 September 1885. The battalion moved from England to Ireland in 1891 and was based at Limerick by 1895. In 1899 it was sent out to South Africa, fighting at Belfast, Lyndenburg, Bethlehem, Wittebergen and Colesberg, and adding "South Africa, 1900-1902" to the regimental honours. The 2nd battalion embarked for Malta in 1884, continuing to India, where it took part in the Hazara Expedition of 1888. In 1895 it was based at Jubbulpure. MCGREAL. Cost: £8.00. Gardeners of Country Houses in county Mayo (1917) The Horticultural Directory and Year Book was published for 57 years by the proprietors of the Journal of Horticulture, but for 1917 it was acquired by the Gardeners' Chronicle, and a complete revision was undertaken. 'In order to ensure the accuracy of the entries, enquiries were sent to every one of the many thousand persons whose names appeared in the lists. Nor did the work cease there, for in cases where no reply was received, a second enquiry, and in some instances even a third, was sent out. Inasmuch as the War has called many gardeners from their normal avocations, it was not possible to obtain information with respect to all the changes which occurred during the year, and particularly during the closing months. It became necessary, therefore, either to go to press with a certain number of unverified entries or to omit them altogether. After careful consideration, the latter course was adopted, and every unverified entry has been omitted.' Pages 75 to 187 of the work are occupied by 'A County Directory of the Principal Gardens in Great Britain and Ireland, including Name of Proprietor, Gardener, and Post Town.' Licentiates in Languages (1918) The Winter 1917-8 Teachers' Diploma Examination of the College of Preceptors began on 31 December, and was held in London and at the following local centres: Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Cork, Dublin, Glasgow, Guernsey, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle-on-Tyne, Plymouth; Accra; Cape Town; Madras, Bangalor, Cawnpore and Coonoor; Kuala Lumpur; Assiut; and Philadelphia. University of Ireland Higher Diploma in Education (1913-1939) The University of Ireland was established by royal charter in 1908, with three constituent colleges - University College, Dublin; University College, Cork; and University College, Galway.
