Volume 76 of The Law Times, 'The Journal of The Law and The Lawyers', a weekly publication, runs from 3 November 1883 to 26 April 1884. Much of the journal is taken up with law reports, leading articles, &c., and the 'Solicitors' Department' contains several regular features of great interest, including 'Creditors under 22 & 23 Vict. c. 35'. That was a piece of legislation introduced to protect executors and administrators from litigation (whether from kin or from creditors) after the assets of the deceased had been distributed, by allowing the publication of notices stipulating a Last Day of Claim, absolving the estate from later demands. These lists are therefore effectively those of the recently deceased whose affairs were in the process of being wound up; the index covers both the deceased and their solicitors.MCMECHAN. | London Priests (1886)
'The Census of Morning and Evening Attendance in the Churches and Chapels of London, Sunday, October 24th, 1886' was compiled by The British Weekly, employing several thousand persons, and extended to every denomination and sect, giving the number of attendances in the morning (M.) and in the evening (E.), and the name of the incumbent or priest conducting the service. 1500 churches and chapels were found at worship in the city on that day: 'the enumeration was made by actual counting, official estimate being in no case accepted when unconfirmed'. The census covered Kensington, Fulham, Chelsea, St George Hanover Square, Westminster, Marylebone, Hampstead, St Pancras, Islington, Hackney, St Giles, Strand, Holborn, London City, Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, St George-in-the-East, Stepney, Mile-end and Poplar in Middlesex; St Saviour Southwark, St Olave Southwark, Lambeth, Wandsworth and Camberwell in Surrey; and Greenwich, Lewisham, and Woolwich in Kent. These 29 registration districts comprised a population of about 4,100,000. About half a million attended morning service on that day; 269,799 Anglicans, 142,425 Congregationalists, and relatively smaller numbers for other denominations.

The Scientific Poultry Breeders Association was by far the largest poultry society in Great Britain, with 16,109 members for the year 1930-1931. This seventeenth annual register, for the year 1932, lists members alphabetically by surname and initials, with addresses. P. F. stands for Poultry Farm.MCMECHAN. | Doctors in Ireland

The Medical Directory was split into several sections. This section covered all medical practitioners resident in (the whole of) Ireland. Each year a schedule was sent to each doctor to be returned to the publishers, so as to keep the directory up to date. In the directory the doctor's name is given first, in bold, surname first, in capitals; then current address. Next are the qualifications; the italic abbreviations in parentheses following the qualifications indicate the medical school at which they were gained. Then there is a list of posts and honours within the profession, starting with those then current; previous posts are preceded by the word 'late'. The Royal Institute of Chemistry was founded in 1877, and was open only to British subjects (and also, in due course, to citizens of the newly-created Republic of Ireland). Associates of the institute (A. R. I. C.) qualified either by studying chemistry, physics, mathematics and an optional science for the institute's examination (which insisted on a high standard of practical laboratory efficiency); or by obtaining good honours degrees or equivalent qualifications, with chemistry as principal subject, and having undergone training in allied sciences. Associates of at least three years' standing could then be admitted to the Fellowship (F. R. I. C.) either by taking a further examination in a special branch of chemistry, or by submitting the results of work or evidence of experience sufficient to justify the Council in granting exemption from such further examination. This register of fellows and associates, correct to 31 August 1950, contains 11,545 names, arranged alphabetically, surname first (in capitals), with qualifications, current address, telephone number, and (in italics) a brief description of present post in the chemical industry. Finally, year of admission as associate (A.) (and, where appropriate, fellow (F.) is given on the right-hand side. With this may appear the notation (x) for a fellow of the Chemical Society, (y) for a member of the Society of Chemical Industry, or (z) for a joint subscriber to all three chartered bodies.MCMECHAN.
