British settlement of America and the West Indies (1669)
This compilation of abstracts of State Papers, Colonial Series, America and West Indies, preserved in the Public Record Office, edited by W. Noel Sainsbury, was published in 1889, and has been reindexed by us. The key materials were drawn from the Colonial Entry Books. For 1669 there are Entry Books for Barbadoes (No. 5); Bermudas (15); Carolina (20); Jamaica (28); Maryland (52); Montserrat (55); Nevis (57); New England (60); Newfoundland (65); New York (68); Surinam (77); and Plantations General (92). Book 102 is for Lists of Acts 1668-1688. Some other sources were collated with these, especially entries from State Papers Domestic entry books. The contents vary from grave matters of state to the transportation of individual felons.

Gentry in London (1856)
The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well.

A compilation of marriage notices from Calcutta newspapers published in England in the Indian Mail in 1857, and covering the period 24 October 1856 to 16 November 1857. Most of the marriages recorded took place within the Bengal presidency.

British officers and civil servants in India (1861)
The Indian Army and Civil Service List for July 1861 was printed by order of the Secretary of State for India in Council. Dating from after the reform of British rule in India in 1858, the one volume brings together lists of British military officers and civil officials. The regimental lists for the army in the three presidencies (Bengal, Madras and Bombay) are arranged as in any Army List of the period, giving officers by rank, with date of rank in the regiment and the army, and remarks. The native regiments had been reorganised and reduced from 174,237 of all ranks on 1 January 1859 to about 110,400 men in 1861.
