Penshurst Manuscripts (1150-1580) C. L. Kingsford prepared a calendar of the papers of Lord de L'Isle and Dudley at Penshurst Place in Kent for the Historical Manuscripts Commission, of which this first volume was published in 1925. The material is presented in eleven sections: I. 39 deeds relating to the Sydney family's Surrey and Sussex estates from about 1150 to 1502; II. Summary notes on deeds from these and other English counties (mainly Essex, Kent, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire) and from Wales and Ireland; III. Documents relating to Robertsbridge Abbey in Sussex (charters and deeds; rentals; court rolls; reeve's accounts at Footland; and bursar's accounts) from 1160 onwards; IV. Deeds and documents relating to the church and college of Tattershall in Lincolnshire (deeds; statutes and ordinances; miscellaneous papers; court rolls; and accounts (warden's, steward's, precentor's and impositor's, receiver's, bailiffs', and building and post-dissolution accounts); V. Family papers and estates accounts of the Cromwells of Tattershall (general accounts and wills; accounts of stewards of the household; building accounts of Tattershall castle; estate accounts); VI. Treasury Books (1699-1700) Records of the Treasury administration in Britain and the colonies, from August 1699 to September 1700. These include records of the appointment and replacement of customs officers such as tide waiters and surveyors. The calendar was prepared by William A. Shaw for the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury and published in 1933, from Treasury Minute Books xi and xii (T29/11-12); King's Warrant Book xx (T52/20); Money Books xiv and xv (T53/14-15); Order Book v (T60/5); Disposition Book xv (T61/15); Out Letters (General) xvi (T27/16); Out Letters (Customs) xiv (T11/14); Reference Book vii (Index 4621); Warrants not Relating to Money xvi (T54/16); Out Letters (Ireland) vii and viii (T14/7-8); Caveat Book i (T64/40); and Out Letters (Plantations Auditor) ii (T64/89). Sailors and marines awarded the Baltic Medal (1854-1857) During the Crimean War, a British and French fleet entered the Baltic, and captured Bomarsund harbour and one of the Aland Islands (now part of Finland). Bomarsund is the sound between the islands and the Swedish island of Vardo; and at the fine harbour on Bomarsund, dominating the entrance of the Gulf of Bothnia, and indirectly that of the Gulf of Finland, the Russians had constructed a northern naval base, and this was destroyed in the attack. The British fleet taking part in the Baltic expedition comprised Her Majesty's ships Aeolus, Ajax, Alban, Algiers, Amphion, Archer, Arrogant, Basilisk, Belleisle, Blenheim, Boscawen, Bulldog, Caesar, Calcutta, Centaur, Colossus, Conflict, Cornwallis, Cossack, Cressy, Cruizer, Cuckoo, Cumberland, Dauntless, Desperate, Dragon, Driver, Duke of Wellington, Edinburgh, Esk, Euryalus, Exmouth, Falcon, Firefly, Geyser, Gladiator, Gorgon, Hannibal, Harrier, Hastings, Hawke, Hecla, Hogue, Imperieuse, James Watt, Leopard, Lightning, Locust, Magicienne, Majestic, Merlin, Miranda, Monarch, Neptune, Nile, Odin, Orion, Otter, Pembroke, Penelope, Pigmy, Porcupine, Prince Regent, Princess Royal, Pylades, Resistance, Retribution, Rhadamanthus, Rosamond, Royal George, Royal William, Russell, St George, St Jean D'Acre, St Vincent, Sphinx, Stromboli, Tartar, Termagant, Tribune, Tyne, Valorous, Volage, Volcano, Vulture, Wrangler and Zephyr. This is the medal roll of the naval and marine claimants who qualified for the Baltic Medal for service in 1854 to 1855. The medals were dispatched in batches from early 1857, the first batch being numbered B A 1, the next B A 2, &c.; then follows the destination (a place or, more usually, a ship) and the date of dispatch. Squadron Leaders: General Duties Branch (1957) The Air Force List for 1957 contains gradation lists for all serving officers, corrected, generally, up to the appointments and promotions gazetted 2 April 1957. The officers are listed by branch, rank, and date of seniority; the names are given surname first, initials, decorations, and various sets of initials relating to their particular qualifications or expertise. A double-headed dagger before the name denotes a permanent direct commission; a dagger a national service commission; an asterisk some other non-permanent commission. The main abbreviations are: a. a., qualified at Army Long Gunnery Staff Course (A. A.); c. f. s., qualified flying instructor (with an asterisk if A1 category, without, A2); I, 1st class interpreter; i, 2nd class interpreter; i. d. c., completed a course at the Imperial Defence College; j. s. s. c., completed a course at the Joint Service Staff College; P, on probation; p. f. c., graduate of Pilot Flying College; p. s. a., graduate of R. A. F. Staff College; p. s. c., graduate of Military Staff College; q. s., R. A. F. graduate of the Military or Naval Staff College; Sp, medical or dental specialist; t. p., graduate of Empire Test Pilots' School; Z, qualified in A. I. S. Inspection Duties. In the Ground Section lists a further set of abbreviations, in bold in brackets in front of the names, identifies certain specialities - AcC, aircraft control; Bal, balloon; FC, fighter control; Ph, photographic; PhI, photographic interpretation; RS, radar supervisor.
