| Licences for marriages in southern England
(1632-1714)
The province or archbishopric of Canterbury covered all England and Wales except for the northern counties in the four dioceses of the archbishopric of York (York, Durham, Chester and Carlisle). Marriage licences were generally issued by the local dioceses, but above them was the jurisdiction of the archbishop. Where the prospective bride and groom were from different dioceses it would be expected that they obtain a licence from the archbishop; in practice, the archbishop residing at Lambeth, and the actual offices of the province being in London, which was itself split into myriad ecclesiastical jurisdictions, and spilled into adjoining dioceses, this facility was particularly resorted to by couples from London and the home counties, although there are quite a few entries referring to parties from further afield. Three calendars of licences issued by the Faculty Office of the archbishop were edited by George A Cokayne (Clarenceux King of Arms) and Edward Alexander Fry and printed as part of the Index Library by the British Record Society Ltd in 1905. The first calendar is from 14 October 1632 to 31 October 1695 (pp. 1 to 132); the second calendar (awkwardly called Calendar No. 1) runs from November 1695 to December 1706 (132-225); the third (Calendar No. 2) from January 1707 to December 1721, but was transcribed only to the death of queen Anne, 1 August 1714. The calendars give only the dates and the full names of both parties. Where the corresponding marriage allegations had been printed in abstract by colonel Joseph Lemuel Chester in volume xxiv of the Harleian Society (1886), an asterisk is put by the entry in this publication. The poll for the election of two citizens to serve in Parliament for the City and Liberty of Westminster was begun 7 September and ended 23 September 1780, the candidates being the Hon. Charles James Fox (F), Sir George Brydges Rodney, bart. (R), and the Right Hon. Thomas Pelham Clinton the Earl of Lincoln (L). In this poll book the names of all voters are given, by parish and within each parish by street, arranged alphabetically by surname and christian name, with the individual votes cast shown in the right hand columns. Pages 1 to 48 cover the parish of St George, Hanover Square; 49 to 100, St Martin; 101 to 134, St Clement and St Mary le Strand; 135 to 155, St Ann, Soho; 157 to 166, St Paul, Covent Garden; 167 to 170, St Martin le Grand; 171 to 224, St James; 225 to 274, St Margaret and St John.PINKSTON. Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. | Leicester Poll Book: Resident Voters
(1832)
A poll was taken on 12 and 13 December 1832 for the election of two representatives in Parliament for the borough of Leicester, the candidates being William Evans esquire (E.), Wynn Ellis esquire (El.) and J. W. Boughton Leigh esquire (L.). This poll book, printed by J. G. Brown of Leicester, gives the name, residence and occupation of all the electors, divided into four categories: resident voters, non-resident voters, resident non-voters, and non-resident non-voters. For those who polled, their votes are marked on the right hand side. Under the 1832 Reform Act the franchise within the borough had been extended to all (adult male) owners or tenants of property worth £10 a year or more.PINKSTON. | Passengers Arriving at Mobile, Alabama (1841)
The custom house at Mobile, Alabama, issued daily reports of the arrivals and clearing of merchantmen. The lists give the type and name of vessel, surname of master, whence arrived or whither departed, and the name of the shipper. Most of the trade was with American ports and Britain. The passenger lists printed in the Alabama Commercial Register and Patriot are generally restricted to surnames, with the occasional initial, christian name or title (Mr, Dr, Capt, Judge &c)

| Private Residents of Birmingham and Suburbs
(1878)
The Post Office Directory of Birmingham with its Suburbs, edited by E. R. Kelly, and published in 1878, has two main alphabetical lists - Court and Commercial. The suburbs included are Aston, Bickenhill Park, Birchfield End, Castle Bromwich, Erdington, Saltley (with Washwood Heath), Ward End (including Little Bromwich) and Witton, in Warwickshire; Handsworth (with Soho), Harborne, Perry Barr and Smethwick, in Staffordshire; and King's Heath, King's Norton, Moseley, Northfield, Selly Oak and Yardley (including Hall Green and Stechford) in Worcestershire. | Missing Next-of-Kin and Heirs-at-Law

The Unclaimed Money Registry and Next-of-Kin Advertisement Office of F. H. Dougal & Co., on the Strand in London, published a comprehensive 'Index to Advertisements for Next of Kin, Heirs at Law, Legatees, &c., &c., who have been Advertised for to Claim Money and Property in Great Britain and all Parts of the World; also Annuitants, Shareholders, Intestates, Testators, Missing Friends, Creditors or their Representatives, Claimants, Unclaimed and Reclaimed Dividends and Stock, Citations, Administrations, Rewards for Certificates, Wills, Advertisements, &c., Claims, Unclaimed Balances, Packages, Addresses, Parish Clerks' Notices, Foreign Intestates, &c., &c.' The original list was compiled about 1860, but from materials dating back even into the 18th century: most of the references belong to 1850 to 1880. For each entry only a name is given, sometimes with a placename added in brackets: there may be a reference number, but there is no key by which the original advertisement may be traced. The enquirer of the time had to remit £1 for a 'Full and Authentic Copy of the Original Advertisement, together with name and date of newspaper in which the same appeared'. PINKSTON.
