Plenary Remission of Sins: Diocese of Salisbury (1404-1415) Individuals (laymen, monks or priests) could obtain indults or indulgences from the Pope that a confessor of their choice might give them, being penitent, plenary remission of sins, once only, in articulo mortis. Lists of these indults, headed De Plenaria Remissione, were entered in the Lateran Regesta in the Vatican archives; from the reigns of popes Innocent VII to John XXIII (1404 to 1415) there are such lists in volumes CXIX, CXXXI, CLIX to CLXI, CLXV, CLXVII and CLXXXIV, from the first year of Innocent VII, the second year of Gregory XII, and the second to fifth years of John XXIII. Those relating to the British Isles were copied and translated by J. A. Twemlow, and printed under the direction of the Master of the Rolls in 1904. Militia in Catsash hundred, Somerset (1569) A muster of the ablemen, gunners, light horsemen, pikemen, archers and billmen available from this hundred, compiled by sir Hugh Paulet, sir Maurice Barkeley, sir Ralph Hopton and John Horner in answer to a royal commission of the 11th year of queen Elizabeth. The returns are arranged by tithing. The hundred consisted of the parishes of Alford, Almsford (Ansford), Babcary, Barton St David, (the market town of) Castle Cary, Compton Pauncefoot, Keinton Mansfield, Kingweston, Lovington, Maperton, North Barrow, North Cadbury, Queen Camel, South Barrow, South Cadbury, Sparkford, Sutton Montis (Montague), West Lydford and Weston Bampfylde. Inhabitants of Somerset (1607-1625) The Reverend E. H. Bates prepared extracts from the Somerset quarter session records of 1607 to 1625 for publication by the Somerset Record Society (xxiii) in 1907. The period is covered by quarter sessions minute book 1 (1613 to 1620) and part of book 2 (1620-1627); these are based on the rolls of recognizances (taken, discharged and forfeited); criminal indictments (not touched on in Bates's extracts); and sessions rolls 1 to 16 (abstracted by A. J. Monday). The records covered and illustrated by these extracts are introduced under the heads Sessions Business; Relief of the Poor; Apprentices, Bastards and Lunatics; Charities (Alms- and Pest-Houses); Housing the Poor; Roads and Bridges; Rates and Appeals; Houses of Correction; and Drink Traffic. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces.
