Inhabitants of the City of London (1780) In August 1780 this loyal petition was made to king George III, subscribed by 2800 'Liverymen, Freemen, and Others, Inhabitants of the City of London', expressing grateful thanks 'for that Protection, which, by the Wisdom, Vigilance, and Activity of your Majesty in Council, was so seasonably given to us, at a Time when our Lives, Property, and every Thing dear to us, were in such imminent Danger, from the Violence of the most outrageous Banditti that ever existed.' This refers to the Gordon Riots, caused by a bill which Parliament introduced in 1778 to repeal certain harsh laws against Roman Catholics: in June 1780 a mob protesting against this repeal assembled in London, forced its way into the House of Commons, attacked Newgate prison releasing many prisoners, and destroyed a great deal of property, until dispersed by the military. Gentry in London (1856) The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well. WIMPERIS. This list of Town Members is arranged alphabetically within fifteen districts (1 City; 2 Strand, Bloomsbury; 3 Pentonville, Islington, Highbury, Holloway; 4 Soho, St James's, Marylebone; 5 Camden Town, Kentish Town, Hampstead, Highgate; 6 Regent's Park, St John's Wood, Kilburn; 7 Paddington, Bayswater, Notting Hill, Acton, Ealing; 8 Brompton, Kensington, Hammersmith; 9 Westminster, Pimlico, Chelsea, Fulham; 10 Bishopsgate Without, Shoreditch, Finsbury, City Road, Hoxton; 11 Kingsland, De Beauvoir Town, Mildmay Park, Stoke Newington, Stamford Hill, Tottenham, Edmonton; 12 Whitechapel, Docks, Stepney, Limehouse, Poplar, Plaistow, Barking; 13 Spitalfields, Hackney Road, Bethnal Green, Mile End, Bow, Old Ford, Stratford; 14 Dalston, Hackney, Homerton, Clapton; 15 Southwark). Fellows of the Royal Institute of British Architects (1888) The Kalendar of the Royal Institure of British Architects for 1888-9 includes this list of members, corrected to 8 November 1888. It is in six parts: Honorary Fellows, Fellows, Honorary Associates, Associates, and those nominated by ballot to become Fellows and Associates. The names throughout are given in full, surname first, with current address. Those members marked * had been previously Members of Council. Members of the present Council were printed in full capitals. Those marked with a dagger were in possession of a certificate of competency to act as a District Surveyor or a Building Surveyor; those with a double dagger had passed the institute's architecture examination. (L) indicates a life member. "The Fellows shall be Architects who have been engaged as Principals for at least seven successive uears in the practice of Architecture."
