Hertfordshire Sessions (1581-1700)
Incidents from the Hertfordshire Sessions Rolls. These cover a wide range of criminal and civil business for the county, with presentments, petitions, and recognizances to appear as witnesses: many of the records concern the county authorities dealing with regulation of alehouses, religious conventicles, absence from church, highways, poaching, profanation of the Sabbath, exercising trades without due apprenticeship &c. Unlike the Sessions Books, the decisions of the justices are not recorded on the rolls, which serve more as a record of evidence and allegations. Where the date of a roll is given with an asterisk, it indicates that that particular document was not then in the county muniments, but in the archives of the Marquess of Salisbury (whose ancestors had served as Custos Rotulorum) at Hatfield House. This is a calendar of abstracts of extracts: it is by no means a completely comprehensive record of the surviving Hertfordshire sessions rolls of the period, but coverage is good.

National ArchivesOutstanding soldiers of the 54th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot (1870-1875)
Each year just a handful of outstanding soldiers of the regiment were chosen for good conduct medals and gratuities: these are listed here. There were two lists, one for men recommended for the Good Conduct Medal without a gratuity, and one for gratuities - £5 to a private, £10 to a corporal, and £15 to a serjeant. Both lists are indexed here, and each gives rank, name, regimental number, date of recommendation and date of issue. (The sample scan is from the 32nd foot). The regiment was sent from Ireland to India in 1871.

 (1870-1875)
National ArchivesOutstanding soldiers of the Bedfordshire Regiment (1881-1901)
Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on Regimental District No. 16 - Bedford. The 1st battalion returned from Nova Scotia 10 February 1870, serving in Ireland to 1872, Jersey to 1873, England to 1877, Ireland to 1882, England to 1887 (by 1885 it was stationed at Colchester), Ireland to 1888, and then back in England. It embarked for Malta 12 February 1890, and was transferred the following December to India, being stationed at Pershawur in 1895. It took part in the Chitral Relief Force, adding "Chitral" to the regimental honours. The 2nd battalion embarked for India 3 February 1876; was moved to Lower Burma in 1881 (at Thayetmyo by 1885), and back to India in 1885. It returned from India 10 February 1892, and in 1895 was at Aldershot. In 1898 the 2nd battalion was transferred to Ireland, and in 1899 to South Africa, gaining the honour "South Africa, 1900-1902".
