The Patent Rolls are the Chancery enrolments of royal letters patent. Those for the 24th to the 27th years of the reign of king Edward III (25 January 1350 to 24 January 1354) were edited for the Public Record Office by R. F. Isaacson, and published in 1907. The main contents are royal commissions and grants; ratifications of ecclesiastical estates; writs of aid to royal servants and purveyors; and pardons. GOLAND. | Yorkshire Testators and Legatees
(1426-1466)
Wills and testaments from the diocese of York (Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Hexhamshire, Lancashire north of the Ribble, and southwest Westmorland) registered at York. Richmond and Southwell archdeaconries had their own lower probate jurisdictions, so the wills registered at York are predominantly from the East and West Ridings and the eastern part of the North Riding of Yorkshire. In theory, wills dealt with real property and testaments with personal property, but the distinction hardly applies in practice: most of these wills are in Latin, but some are in English. Being before the Reformation, they commonly start with benefactions to churches, chantries, chapels, &c., and with provisions for the burning of candles ('lights') and saying of masses.GOLAND. | London Marriage Allegations
(1521-1610)
London, Essex and part of Hertfordshire lay within the diocese of London. In the later 17th century the individual archdeaconry courts issued marriage licences, but for this period the only surviving material is from the overarching London Consistory court. The main series of marriage allegations from the consistory court starts 7 December 1597, and these were extracted by Colonel Joseph Lemuel Chester; Colonel Chester then discovered earlier material, back to 5 January 1521, in Vicar-General's Books of the Principal Probate Registry. The notices in these books were much briefer, but as well as extending back so much earlier, they included additional material for 1597 onwards. All this he collated with the consistory court extracts, and the text was edited by George J. Armytage and published by the Harleian Society in 1887. A typical later entry will give date; name, address and occupation of groom; name, address and condition of his intended bride, and/or, where she is a spinster, her father's name, address and occupation. Lastly we have the name of the church where the wedding was going to take place; or the words Gen. Lic. signifying a general or open licence.GOLAND. Cost: £4.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

Records of the Treasury administration in Britain, America and the colonies, for 1713. Also includes Queen Anne's Civil List (royal expenditure) Lottery papers: payment of the royal servants had fallen two years in arrear: Parliament passed an Act allowing the queen to raise half a million pounds by pledging 32 years' future income: she did this by means of a lottery.

Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. 1 January to 3 October 1746GOLAND. | Freeholders voting in Castle ward, Northumberland
(1826)
An election to choose two knights of the shire to represent Northumberland took place at Alnwick from 20 June to 6 July 1826. The candidates were Henry Thomas Liddell (L), Matthew Bell (B), Thomas Wentworth Beaumont (Bt) and Viscount Howick (H). The franchise included all freeholders of property worth 40 shillings or more per annum: each had two votes, but could plump for a single candidate. This poll book was published in 1827 and lists the voters from each ward: the freeholder's full name (surname first), residence, and the nature of the freehold (such as 'house at Corbridge'). The votes are shown in the right hand columns, with plumpers shown by a dagger. Castle ward included North Shields and the surrounding countryside.GOLAND. Cost: £6.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

Gun & Co. of 6 Prince of Wales' Road, London, in about 1870 published this fourth 'List of Next of Kin & Heirs, &c., who have been Advertised for in the English, Irish, Scotch, United States of America, Canadian, Australian, East and West Indian, and other Newspapers, since 1704. Money & Property to the value of many Millions Sterling want Claimants'. The list of 4,128 names gives surname, christian name, and, occasionally, locality. Official announcements of the British administration in Palestine were issued, By Authority, in the weekly Palestine Gazette. These include registration of business partnerships. The details are set out in the form: 1. Names and addresses of partners; 2. Firm name of partnership; 3. Names of partners authorised to administer the partnership and to sign for it; 4. Date of commencement and determination; 5. Object. In addition, there are various notices as to addition or removal of partners, dissolution of partnerships, &c.
