There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. Civil Service Appointments (1861) The Civil Service Commission published an annual list of all persons who had obtained certificates of qualification for appointment in the various public departments. The list gives full name (surname first); department (such as Post Office, or Inland Revenue); situation (such as Letter-carrier, or Clerk); and date of certificate. Candidates whose names are preceded by a dagger obtained appointments as the result of competition; a double dagger indicates open competition. Those whose names are preceded by an asterisk obtained honorary additions to their certificates either for proficiency in extra subjects chosen by themselves, or for marked proficiency in the prescribed subjects. Then follows a further list of these candidates who had obtained Honorary Additions to their Certificates in this way: giving name (surname and initials); position in the service (department and situation); subjects for which honorary additions were made; and 'extent of knowledge displayed' (such as Creditable, Fair, or Very Creditable). 1 January to 31 December 1861. Unclaimed Money and Property (1866) Gun & Co. of 17 Charlotte Street, and later of 6 Prince of Wales' Road, London, in about 1866 published this second 'List of Next of Kin & Heirs, &c., who have been Advertised for in the English, Irish, Scotch, United States of America, Canadian, Australian, East and West Indian, and other Newspapers, since 1704. Money & Property to the value of many Millions Sterling want Claimants'. The list of 4,128 names gives surname, christian name, and, occasionally, locality. Elementary Teachers in Barnsley (1880) The National Union of Elementary Teachers, established in 1870, brought together members of the profession throughout England and Wales, organized in local Teachers' Associations. Lists of members of the associations were printed in the annual reports. Each association's officers are listed first, then the ordinary members. Surnames are given, Mr/Mrs/Miss, initial(s), and the name of the school - B. S., British School; Bd. S., Board School; Congl. S., Congregational School; End. S., Endowed School; Gr. S., Grammar School; N. S., National School; Par. S., Parochial School; Pres. S., Presbyterian School; R. C. S., Roman Catholic School; Undl. S., Undenominational School; W. S., Wesleyan School. Medical Practitioners in Scotland (1926) The Medical Directory was split into several sections. The Scottish section covered all medical practitioners resident within Scotland. Each year a schedule was sent to each doctor to be returned to the publishers, so as to keep the directory up to date. In the directory the doctor's name is given first, in bold, surname first, in capitals; then current address. Next are the qualifications; the italic abbreviations in parentheses following the qualifications indicate the medical school at which they were gained. Then there is a list of posts and honours within the profession, starting with those then current; previous posts are preceded by the word 'late'. Public health specialists (1928) The Royal College of Surgeons, established by royal charters, issued this calendar 1 August 1928, including official lists of all its fellows, members, licentiates and diplomates. The register of fellows gives full name (surname first) and address (in italics), with dates of admission as fellow and member. The list of members gives year of admission, full name (surname first) and town or country of residence. The lists of licentiates give year of admission and full name, but no indication of current address: entries of fellows of the college are prefixed with a double dagger, those of members with an asterisk. The lists of diplomates give year of admission and full name (surname first), with those diplomates who were neither members nor fellows of the college indicated with a dagger. Pianists (1929) The Calendar of the Trinity College of Music, London, for the year 1929 includes lists of licentiates and associates including these musicians. Surnames and initials are given; but women are distinguished by having their (first) christian name stated.
