The province or archbishopric of Canterbury covered all England and Wales except for the northern counties in the four dioceses of the archbishopric of York (York, Durham, Chester and Carlisle). Marriage licences were generally issued by the local dioceses, but above them was the jurisdiction of the archbishop, exercised through his vicar-general. Where the prospective bride and groom were from different dioceses it would be expected that they obtain a licence from the archbishop; in practice, the archbishop residing at Lambeth, and the actual offices of the province being in London, which was itself split into myriad ecclesiastical jurisdictions, and spilled into adjoining dioceses, this facility was particularly resorted to by couples from London and the home counties, although there are quite a few entries referring to parties from further afield. The abstracts of the allegations given here usually state name, address (street in London, or parish), age, and condition of bride and groom; and sometimes the name, address and occupation of the friend or relative filing the occupation. Where parental consent was necessary, a mother's or father's name may be given. The ages shown should be treated with caution; ages above 21 tended to be reduced, doubtless for cosmetic reasons; ages under 21 tended to be increased, particularly to avoid requiring parental consent; a simple statement 'aged 21' may merely mean 'of full age' and indicate any age from 21 upwards. These are merely allegations to obtain licences; although nearly all will have resulted in the issuing of the licence, many licences did not then result in marriage. MINETT. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. Because of the delay before some collectors made their returns, this register includes indentures and articles from as early as 1722. This calendar of Home Office papers was edited by Joseph Redington and published in 1878. The period covered by this index is from the accession of king George III, 25 October 1760, to 31 December 1761. The documents abstracted were a part of the great archive called the State Papers Domestic, and comprised letters to and from the Secretaries of State, and other letters; reports; memorials and petitions; and warrants of various kinds. Some repetitive material was reduced into tables. We have teased out this diverse and heterogeneous material into separate indexes for each subject. MINETT. The election of a knight of the shire to represent the county of Gloucester in Parliament began 6 May and continued until 17 May 1776, the Hon. George Cranfield Berkeley and William Bromley Chester, esq., being the candidates. The franchise was for adult males possessing freehold worth 40s or more per annum. This poll book lists all voters, arranged by hundred and then by township according to the place where their freehold lay. The voter's full name is given (surname first); place of abode; of what the freehold consists (such as messuage and lands); in whose tenure; and how his vote was cast.MINETT.
