Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. The probate courts of the Australian colonies furnished returns of estates of deceased intestates, giving full name, colonial residence, supposed British or foreign residence of family (often unknown, or left blank), amount of the estate and how much had been disbursed and how. The date of death is often stated, and if by accident, suicide or crime. Names were carried forward from return to return until the estate was expended or exhausted. QUALTROUGH. The Education Department set examinations of trainee teachers at the various training colleges in Britain. The sample scan is from the examination class lists, together with which were also printed lists of Queen's Scholars. First class scholarships of £17, with a personal allowance of £3, were awarded to pupil teachers and others for their teacher training. The scholarship lists are arranged in order of merit, with full names (surname first), and the name of the school at which the candidate was teaching. The National Union of Elementary Teachers, established in 1870, brought together members of the profession throughout England and Wales, organized in local Teachers' Associations. Lists of members of the associations were printed in the annual reports. Each association's officers are listed first, then the ordinary members. Surnames are given, Mr/Mrs/Miss, initial(s), and the name of the school - B. S., British School; Bd. S., Board School; Congl. S., Congregational School; End. S., Endowed School; Gr. | Engineers' Obituary: Liverpool

The Amalgamated Society of Engineers paid out a benefit (usually £12) on the death of paid-up members, and £5 in the case of their wives. The union's annual accounts therefore included an obituary for each previous year, listing, branch by branch, all members and their wives dying during the year, with age, cause of death, and amount of benefit. Full names are given for each member, but wives' christian names are not stated - e. g. 'John Smith's wife'. The tables are arranged into the broad divisions of Total Losses at Sea (founderings, strandings, collisions, other causes, and missing); Partial Losses at Sea (founderings, strandings, collisions and other causes); Total Losses in Rivers, Lakes and Harbours (founderings, strandings, collisions and other causes); and Partial Losses in Rivers, Lakes and Harbours (founderings, strandings, collisions and other causes). In each case they state (so far as known) the date; name and age of the vessel; port of registry (if British); class in Lloyd's Register, Liverpool Book or Bureau Veritas; description of vessel, and whether iron (I.) or wood (W.); tons; number of crew; name of master (usually surname and initials); name and address of owner(s); port sailed from; port bound to; cargo and number of passengers (if any); number of lives lost; wind (direction and strength); and place of casualty. July 1897 to June 1898
