(1804) The Society for the Registry of Shipping was instituted in 1760, and published an annual register and supplement. The annual register consisted of an alphabetical list of ships surveyed for insurance in Britain and Ireland, together with an alphabetical supplement. The society maintained a Registry Office at which alterations and additions were notified, and members delivering their registers when called for had them updated and returned on the following or the ensuing day. The annual register included a section listing the ships currently in the East India Company's service, giving date of last sailing from England; the name of the ship (with the letters s. C where sheathed with copper); the captain's name; where bound; when and where built; the name of the husband (the agent appointed by the company to attend to the business of the ship while in port); and the tonnage.
