In August 1780 this loyal petition was made to king George III, subscribed by 2800 'Liverymen, Freemen, and Others, Inhabitants of the City of London', expressing grateful thanks 'for that Protection, which, by the Wisdom, Vigilance, and Activity of your Majesty in Council, was so seasonably given to us, at a Time when our Lives, Property, and every Thing dear to us, were in such imminent Danger, from the Violence of the most outrageous Banditti that ever existed.' This refers to the Gordon Riots, caused by a bill which Parliament introduced in 1778 to repeal certain harsh laws against Roman Catholics: in June 1780 a mob protesting against this repeal assembled in London, forced its way into the House of Commons, attacked Newgate prison releasing many prisoners, and destroyed a great deal of property, until dispersed by the military.PINCHBACK. The London Law Directory section of the Universal British Directory includes lists of officers, officials and clerks from the High Court of Chancery, Hanaper Office, Examiners Office, Commissioners of Bankrupts, Corporation of Cursitors Office, Commissioners of Lunatics, the courts of King's Bench, Common Pleas, and Exchequer, the Exchequer Office of Pleas, &c. &c., the Duchy of Lancaster Office, the Lord Mayor's Court Office, and the Court of Marshalsea, as well as public notaries, officers of the judges' circuits, proprietors of provincial newspapers, sworn brokers of the City of London, and Jew brokers.PINCHBACK. The provincial sections of the Universal British Directory include lists of gentry and traders from each town and the surrounding countryside, with names of local surgeons, lawyers, postmasters, carriers, &c. (the sample scan here is from the section for Bath). The directory started publication in 1791, but was not completed for some years, and the provincial lists, sent in by local agents, can date back as early as 1790 and as late as 1797.

| London city aldermen and officials

The city of London already comprised a smaller area than London as a whole. The city was governed by the Lord Mayor and aldermen. Each aldermen represented a ward, but also had to be a citizen, i. e., a member of a city company. The aldermen, their wards and companies, and the deputies and common council of the respective wards, with their occupations and addresses are listed in Holden's Triennial Directory of 1805 to 1807. This list also covers the members of the various committees involved in governing the city, governors of city institutions, and local government officials and officers.PINCHBACK. | Shoreditch Refuge for the Destitute: Subscribers

The Refuge for the Destitute, Middlesex House, Hackney Road, Shoreditch, was supported by donations and subscriptions. This list of subscribers, correct to 1 April 1815, lists all donations, as well as subscriptions received in the previous year, the names being arranged by initial letter of surname or title, then in order of precedence, with nobility, gentry, and then commoners in alphabetical order, often with an address. On the right-hand side of each page there are two columns, the first being for donations (in pounds and shillings), the other for annual subscriptions (usually of a guinea). A donation of ten guines or more qualified the donor as a Governor for Life: these are indicated by an asterisk in front of the name. C indicates a member of the committee; S, having served as a steward; V.P. a vice-president.
The object of this society was, to provide a place of refuge for persons discharged from prisons, or the hulks, unfortunate and deserted females, and others, who from loss of character, or extreme indigence, could not procure an honest maintenance though willing to work; also, in cases of very urgent necessity, to afford temporary relief to distressed persons, until parochial or other assistance could be obtained, 'and thereby to put an end to the plea of necessity urged by many of the idle, disorderly and profligate characters that infest our streets'.
