This alphabetical list of members of the University of Durham and of the College of Medicine, Newcastle, gives full names; those marked with an asterisk being Members of Convocation; those marked with a dagger being either fellows or late fellows of the university. On the righthand side is a column of dates. In the case of graduates this is the year in which the examination for the degree of B. A. was passed; and in the case of Licentiates in Theology, and of Civil Engineers, to the year in which each passed the final examination. Those dates that are marked with a double dagger are years in which the graduate, being a member of another university, passed the final examination in theology at Durham. The list of members of the Royal Agricultural Society gives names and addresses: life members are indicated by a dagger. (The names of 60 members were omitted on account of their subscriptions to the society being in arrear to 31 December 1859). This list is correct to June 1861; as of 11 December of that year there were 84 life governors, 95 annual governors, 1124 life members, 3399 annual members and 17 honorary members, making a total of 4719 names, mostly of landowners and agriculturists.BESLEY. | Masters of Workhouses: Derbyshire

Most Poor Law Unions maintained a workhouse. The Union List for 1863, arranged by counties and unions, and spread across facing pages, gives in the final columns the names of the masters of each workhouse, and the number of inmates. This number is the number fixed by the Poor Law Board. A few related institutions - Houses of Industry for Out-door Poor, Industrial Schools, Houses of Recovery, &c., are also included, and there are also some masters of workhouses outside the Poor Law Union system maintained by parishes under local acts, and in Gilbert's Incorporations. | Boys entering Harrow School

This First Volume of the Second Series of the Harrow School Register was edited by J. H. Stogdon and published in 1925. The boys are listed by term of entrance, and then alphabetically by surname and christian names (in bold). Next, in brackets and in italics, is the school house to which he belonged - or, H. B. indicating a day boy whose family lived in Harrow. Stogdon then gives the father's surname and initials, and address. In cases where the boy was prominent in sports at school, or won academic prizes, scholarships &c., that is given; then the year of leaving the school; and a synopsis of his career, so far as known.

| Electors for Wootton Wawen

A poll for the election of two knights of the shire to represent South Warwickshire was held 24 November 1868: the candidates were Lord Hyde (H.), Sir R. N. C. Hamilton (H.), H. C. Wise, Esq. (W.) and John Hardy, Esq. (H.). This poll book lists all those electors who voted; the county franchise included not only male freeholders of 40s a year, but also £10 copyholders and long-leaseholders, and £50 short-leaseholders and tenants. In addition, where no vote was cast the elector's number and name are given, the name in italics. The names are arranged by polling district and then by parish or township. Freeholders holding requisite property in a district are listed there, but might well reside elsewhere. The right-hand column indicates how each man voted. BESLEY. | Boys at Merchant Taylors' School in London

Merchant Taylors' School was founded by members of the livery company of the merchant taylors of the city of London in 1561 as a grammar school. By the 19th century this was a major English public school. In 1875 the school removed from Suffolk Lane, in the City, to a new building in Charterhouse Square in Finsbury. In 1907 the Reverend William Baker, a former headmaster, published this school register for the period 1871 to 1900, which we have indexed by year of admission. Each entry gives the boy's name in full (surname, christian name(s)); date of birth; names of both parents (middle names as initials); occupation of father; career summary; and (in italics) address as of 1907.
