Outstanding soldiers of the South Staffordshire Regiment
(1881-1901)
Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 38th Regimental District - Lichfield. The 1st battalion embarked from Ireland for Malta in 1880, and was moved in 1882 to Egypt, where it gained the honour "Egypt, 1882". Having been withdrawn to Malta in 1883, the troops were brought back into Egypt and the Soudan, adding "Nile, 1884-5" and "Kirbekan"). They were taken back to Gibraltar in 1886, but returned to Egypt in 1891. In 1893 the battalion returned home; in 1898 it was moved to Ireland; in 1899 to Gibraltar; and in 1900 to take part in the South African war, taking part in the relief of Wepener, and the fighting at Wittebergen and in the Orange River Colony, and adding "South Africa, 1900-1902" to the colours. The 2nd battalion returned from Singapore in 1880, and in 1885 was stationed at Manchester; it embarked for Egypt 18 February 1893.BLANTON. Cost: £8.00.  | Sample scan, click to enlarge

203 officers and 4508 other ranks of the Grenadier Guards were killed in the Great War; 242 officers and 6939 men were wounded. This nominal roll lists all the warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and men killed in action, or who died of wounds or disease, in the European war of 1914 to 1918. The Royal College of Surgeons, established by royal charters, issued this calendar 1 August 1928, including official lists of all its fellows, members, licentiates and diplomates. The register of fellows gives full name (surname first) and address (in italics), with dates of admission as fellow and member. The list of members gives year of admission, full name (surname first) and town or country of residence. The lists of licentiates give year of admission and full name, but no indication of current address: entries of fellows of the college are prefixed with a double dagger, those of members with an asterisk. The lists of diplomates give year of admission and full name (surname first), with those diplomates who were neither members nor fellows of the college indicated with a dagger.
