Inhabitants of Saddleworth, Yorkshire (1853) William White's directory lists traders, farmers and private residents in the area. When searching the early records it is important to note that Saddleworth, although being in the West Riding of Yorkshire, was a chapelry of the parish of Rochdale in Lancashire, and so lay in the diocese of Chester (and later Manchester), not in the diocese of York. Long-stay Paupers in Workhouses: Saddleworth (1861) This comprehensive return by the Poor Law Board for England and Wales in July 1861 revealed that of the 67,800 paupers aged 16 or over, exclusive of vagrants, then in the Board's workhouses, 14,216 (6,569 men, 7,647 women) had been inmates for a continuous period of five years and upwards. The return lists all these long-stay inmates from each of the 626 workhouses that had been existence for five years and more, giving full name; the amount of time that each had been in the workhouse (years and months); the reason assigned why the pauper in each case was unable to sustain himself or herself; and whether or not the pauper had been brought up in a district or workhouse school (very few had). The commonest reasons given for this long stay in the workhouse were: old age and infirm (3,331); infirm (2,565); idiot (1,565); weak mind (1,026); imbecile (997); and illness (493). BYRAM. Patentees of New Inventions (1862) Abstracts of British patents for new inventions applied for and granted from 1 January to 31 December 1862: giving date, name and address, and short description of the invention. Unclaimed Money and Property (1870) Gun & Co. of 6 Prince of Wales' Road, London, in about 1870 published this fourth 'List of Next of Kin & Heirs, &c., who have been Advertised for in the English, Irish, Scotch, United States of America, Canadian, Australian, East and West Indian, and other Newspapers, since 1704. Money & Property to the value of many Millions Sterling want Claimants'. The list of 4,128 names gives surname, christian name, and, occasionally, locality. Exhibitors of Dogs at Belle Vue (1874) Manchester Fat Cattle, Poultry and Dog Show took place at the Zoological Gardens, Belle Vue, from 22 to 24 December 1874. This comprised the Second Great Annual Exhibition of Fat Cattle, Sheep, Pigs, Roots, and Corn, and the Fourteenth Annual Exhibition of Poultry, Pigeon and Dogs; for which this single joint catalogue was issued. The full names and addresses of exhibitors (and, where appropriate, breeders) were given, both in a general directory and in the detailed class lists of exhibits. The exhibits in this section were divided into pointers; bloodhounds; setters; deerhounds; greyhounds; retrievers; spaniels; mastiffs; mount saint bernards; newfoundlands; sheep dogs; dalmatians; pomeranians; bull dogs; terriers; dachshunds; pugs; italian greyhounds; king charles spaniels; blenheim spaniels; and 'other breeds'. Roll of Honour: Banstead Mental Hospital Staff (1914-1918) The London County Council published a 'Record of Service in the Great War 1914-1918 by Members of the Council's Staff' in 1922. This included a complete list, department by department, of the over 7000 staff who had served in the armed forces during the war, those dying while on active service being marked with an asterisk. Workers from the City of Birmingham Gas Department who fought in the Great War (1919) The Roll of Honour for the department lists the men who joined his Majesty's forces, giving for each his surname, and christian name or initials. The names are arranged by works - Windsor Street, Nechells, Council House and Wednesbury, Saltley, Distribution, Central Laboratory, Test Works and Laboratories, Adderley Street, and Swan Village.
