Hare Coursing Competitors at Market Weighton (1856)
Names of competitors from results recorded in the Coursing Calendar for September to December 1856; in which the meetings are listed chronologically, giving precise dates and the names of the presiding officers (stewards, judge, slipper, field officer, secretary). In each heat two greyhounds are raced, the winner from each pair proceeding to the next heat. Each dog is identified by its name and that of its owner. The parents of the winning dog are usually stated. The name of each competition is given with the number of nominations, the stakes and prizes. There are also occasional matches between particular dogs. These abbreviations are used: b. bitch; bd. brindled; be. blue; bk. black; br. l. broken leg; cr. cream; d. dog; dn. dun; dr. (with)drawn; dr. l. drawn lame; f. fawn; gr. grey; p. puppy; r. red; t. ticked; tn. tanned; w. white.

Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain: Registered Apprentices
(1856)
The membership list of the Pharmaceutical Society was divided into London Members; Country Members; Foreign Life Members; Associates admitted before 1 July 1842; Associates who have passed the Major Examination; and Associates who have passed the Minor Examination. In each case the lists give year of admission; number of certificate (where appropriate); name (surname first, christian name and initials); and address (house number and street name in London, merely town of residence elsewhere). An asterisk before the surname indicates a life member (except in the list of Foreign Life Members). There is also a list of registered apprentices: in this list we have year of registration, full name (surname first); master's name (in the form 'residing with Mr. Smith') and town.HUSTWICK.  Royal Artillery fighting in China
(1856-1860)
The China Medal was awarded to soldiers and sailors who took part in the prosecution of the war against the Chinese from 1856 to 1860. Separate clasps were awarded for men who had been in receipt of the China Medal of 1842; for being actually present at Canton on 28 and 29 December 1857, when that city was bombarded and finally captured; for being actually engaged in the operations which ceased with the first capture of the Taku Forts, 20 May 1858, and led to the Treaty of Tientsin; for being actually present at the capture of the Taku Forts 21 August 1860; and for being actually present before Pekin the day the gate of that city was given up to the allied (British and French) army, viz. on 13 October 1860. It included Ordinations; Recognitions (services when a new minister is introduced to his congregation); Calls Accepted (newly-qualified theological students are appointed to their first posts); Removals (of ministers from one place to another); Resignations; Deaths of Ministers; Deaths of Ministers' Wives; Deaths of Ministers' Widows; and Testimonials (presentations by congregations to long-serving or departing ministers). Precise dates and places are usually given in the case of ordinations, recognition services and deaths. The ministers are referred to by surname and initials; the ministers' wives and widows are never given christian name or initials.
