The China Medal was awarded to soldiers and sailors involved in the various actions of the war against China, in which this ship was engaged from 1856 to 1860. The medals were either delivered on board or sent on in 1862: except that many of the men were no longer immediately traceable, and the remarks on the roll show that some medals were not sent on for several years, and some were never sent. After the main roll there is a section showing which of the men also qualified for clasps. Separate clasps were awarded for men who had been in receipt of the China Medal of 1842; for the taking of Fatshan in 1857, Canton in 1857, Taku Forts in 1858, Taku Forts in 1860, and Pekin in 1860. Most of the men on this ship are shown as having been given the Taku Forts 1860 clasp, for being actually present at the capture of the Taku Forts 21 August 1860.LANGDOWN. The Metropolitan Police Register of Joiners (MEPO 4/335) lists policemen joining the force 1 July 1878 to 31 December 1891 (warrant numbers 62845 to 77318). The register is alphabetical, in so far as the recruits are listed chronologically grouped under first letter of surname (I and J, and U and V being treated as single initials). Each year the best soldiers were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' The Horticultural Directory and Year Book was published for 57 years by the proprietors of the Journal of Horticulture, but for 1917 it was acquired by the Gardeners' Chronicle, and a complete revision was undertaken. 'In order to ensure the accuracy of the entries, enquiries were sent to every one of the many thousand persons whose names appeared in the lists. Nor did the work cease there, for in cases where no reply was received, a second enquiry, and in some instances even a third, was sent out. Inasmuch as the War has called many gardeners from their normal avocations, it was not possible to obtain information with respect to all the changes which occurred during the year, and particularly during the closing months. It became necessary, therefore, either to go to press with a certain number of unverified entries or to omit them altogether. After careful consideration, the latter course was adopted, and every unverified entry has been omitted.'
Pages 75 to 187 of the work are occupied by 'A County Directory of the Principal Gardens in Great Britain and Ireland, including Name of Proprietor, Gardener, and Post Town.'
