Each issue of Lloyd's Weekly News, of London, contained a column devoted to searches for Long-Lost Relatives. The inquiries were arranged in three groups: Home Inquiries (i. e., from correspondents in the United Kingdom); Colonial and Foreign Inquiries (from abroad); and Soldiers' and Sailors' Inquiries. Results from all these were grouped together as 'Answers to Inquiries'.
Each column was headed: 'Correspondents MUST give full addresses and the DATES OF THE INQUIRIES to which they refer. We cannot search back numbers, nor print inquiries for "missing husbands." These columns are not intended for inquiries in respect to claimants for money, and no agents, at home or abroad, have any connection with Lloyd's.'MCNALLY. Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 75th Regimental District - Aberdeen. The 1st battalion was moved from Malta to Egypt in 1882, and added "Egypt, 1882, 1884", "Tel-el-Kebir" and "Nile 1884-1885" to the regimental honours. It was moved to Malta in 1885; on to Ceylon in 1888; and from there to India in 1891, being stationed at Rawul Pindee by 1895. It took part in the Chitral Relief Force of 1895, and the North West Frontier campaign of 1897 to 1898, adding "Chitral" and "Tirah" to the honours. The battalion returned to Scotland in 1898, but was sent out for the South African war in 1899. The 2nd battalion was moved from India to South Africa in 1881, taking part in the Boer war, returned home in 1882, and by 1885 was stationed at Devonport. It was sent to the Channel Islands in 1885; to Ireland in 1887; and back to Scotland in 1891, and by 1895 was stationed at Glasgow. It was moved to England in 1896; to India in 1898; and to South Africa in 1899. The two battalions added "South Africa, 1899-1902", "Paardeberg" and "Defence of Ladysmith" to the colours.MCNALLY. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 25th Regimental District - Berwick-on-Tweed. The 1st battalion embarked for India 13 October 1875, and was stationed at Meerut by 1885. It returned from India 6 February 1891, and in 1895 was at York. The 2nd battalion returned from Aden to England 27 March 1876: in 1879 it was moved to Ireland and by 1885 was stationed at Dublin. After a brief stay on Gibraltar in 1886, the battalion returned to England. 19 July 1888 the battalion embarked for Egypt, and from there was sent into the Soudan, fighting at Gemaizah; it was moved back into Egypt in 1889, and in 1890 set sail for India, where in took part in the Chitral Relief Force and the North West Frontier campaign, adding "Chitral" and "Tirah" to the colours. In 1895 the troops were at Rawul Pindee. The regiment took part in the South African war, gaining the distinctions "South Africa, 1900-1902" and "Paardeberg".MCNALLY. | British artillerymen fighting in South Africa
(1899-1902)
The Queen Victoria's South Africa Medal was awarded (after her death, in the event) to all who had served honourably in the various campaigns in the Boer War. Returns were made from each unit, and consolidated into nominal roll, of which this is the one for the Royal Artillery. Confusingly, the ledgers used had originally been printed for a register of men transferred (or re-transferred after mobilization) to 1st Class Army Reserve. All the original column headings were therefore struck through, and the roll was prepared with this information: Date of Issue; Regimental Number; Rank; Name; Unit; Medal (a 1 indicating that a medal was awarded); [number of] Clasps; the reference to the source in the original returns, usually starting with AG for papers in the hands of the Adjutant-General, and 68/Art/ for the Royal Artillery records. | Queen's South Africa Medal: Royal Field Artillery: 85th Battery
(1901-1905)
The nominal roll for the Queen Victoria's South Africa Medal - awarded (after her death, in the event) to all who had served honourably in the various campaigns in the Boer War - was compiled from these returns from the individual units. Two sets of form were completed. The main one, as in the sample scan, dates from 1901 and gives regimental number, rank, and full name (surname first), followed by a series of columns relating to different actions - Belmont, Modder River, Paardeberg, Dreifontein, Wepener, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast, Wittebergen, Defence of Kimberley, Relief of Kimberley, Defence of Mafeking, Relief of Mafeking, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, Rhodesia, Talana, Elandslaagte, Tugela Heights, Defence of Ladysmith, Relief of Ladysmith, Laing's Nek, and Natal; each entitled the man to a separate clasp to the medal, and a tick or a Yes in the appropriate column indicates the man's actual physical presence in that battle. A final column for remarks is important in those cases where the man was no longer in the unit, by removal, death or desertion. The second form that sometimes occurs was returned in 1905, and covers men entitled to the Second South African War Medal and Clasps. It lists men by number, rank and name, checks whether they had claimed the Queen's South Africa Medal, and then enquires as to their suitability as to three Colony Clasps, which could be awarded for service in the Cape, Orange Free, or Transvaal; whether entitled to Date Clasps (South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902); whether also entitled to the King's South Africa Medal; any other corps in which served in South Africa; and remarks (such as becoming non-effective, forfeiture, &c.) | Carpenters Excluded from their Union: Dublin (1907)
The 48th annual report of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, from December 1906 to December 1907, gives lists of members excluded from the union: the great majority for arrears of membership fees, but some for 'non-payment of entrance money'; 'for working contrary to the society's interest'; 'false declaration of entry'; 'imposing on the society's funds'; 'withholding the funds of the society'; 'violating rule while on sick benefit'; 'bringing the society into discredit'; and 'members who have paid up and resigned'.
