| Harley Correspondence
(1516-1774)
Part of the Portland collection of manuscripts was transferred to Longleat in Wiltshire after the marriage in 1759 of Thomas Thynne, late Marquis of Bath, with the eldest daughter of the 2nd Duke of Portland. These included the papers of her maternal grandfather, Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford. Mrs S. C. Lomas prepared this calendar for the Historical Manuscripts Commission, published in 1907. These letters had been chosen in an earlier age from the Harvey family correspondence, and bound in two volumes as 'Select Autograph Letters, &c., 1516 to the middle of the 18th century,' and from among these Mrs Lomas in turn chose hitherto unpublished material that seemed of historical interest.MEGGS. The poll for the election of two citizens to serve in Parliament for the City and Liberty of Westminster was begun 7 September and ended 23 September 1780, the candidates being the Hon. Charles James Fox (F), Sir George Brydges Rodney, bart. (R), and the Right Hon. Thomas Pelham Clinton the Earl of Lincoln (L). In this poll book the names of all voters are given, by parish and within each parish by street, arranged alphabetically by surname and christian name, with the individual votes cast shown in the right hand columns. Pages 1 to 48 cover the parish of St George, Hanover Square; 49 to 100, St Martin; 101 to 134, St Clement and St Mary le Strand; 135 to 155, St Ann, Soho; 157 to 166, St Paul, Covent Garden; 167 to 170, St Martin le Grand; 171 to 224, St James; 225 to 274, St Margaret and St John.MEGGS. | Dorset Volunteer Rangers
(1794)
A subscription of £1425 10s was raised in Dorset in 1794 towards the cost of 'forming Bodies of Men for the Internal Defence of the Country, not liable to be drawn out, except in cases of actual Invasion or Commotion'. On 17 September 1794 the whole corps was reviewed by king George III under Maiden Castle, 'who returned them thanks, and expressed much pleasure at seeing them so alert and forward in their manoeuvres'. The muster roll of the Dorset Volunteer Rangers gives the full name and parish for each volunteer. 'These men clothed and horsed themselves entirely at their own expense, without receiving one farthing from Government, except their sword, one pistol, and holsters.'MEGGS. | Inhabitants of Bath in Somerset

The provincial sections of the Universal British Directory include lists of gentry and traders from each town and the surrounding countryside, with names of local surgeons, lawyers, postmasters, carriers, &c. (the sample scan here is from the section for Bath). The directory started publication in 1791, but was not completed for some years, and the provincial lists, sent in by local agents, can date back as early as 1790 and as late as 1797.
