The Mercantile Navy List and Annual Appendage to the Commercial Code of Signals for All Nations, edited by J. H. Brown, was published By Authority in 1857. It includes this full list of 'Masters and Mates who have passed their examination and obtained Certificates of Competency', from number 1 to number 15816, except for those whose certificates had been cancelled. The first column gives the number of certificate; the second column full name, surname first (an asterisk before the name denotes those who are found qualified to act in fore and aft-rigged vessels only; two vertical lines denotes in North Wales fishery only; a double dagger, passed the examination in steam; and a dagger refers to honorary testimonials, details of which are printed at the end of the section. A B C D are the distinguishing letters for the four classes of Meteorological Observers); third column, class examined (1 ex, 1, 2 and 3 denote First Extra, First, Second and Third Class Master's Certificate, granted under the Voluntary Examination, by Order in Council dated August 1845; Ex C, Master Extra; O C, Master Ordinary; 1 M, First Mate; O M, Only Mate; 2 M, Second Mate; L. | Voters for St Neots

A poll for the election of two knights of the shire to represent the county of Huntingdon took place 2 April 1857: the candidates were James Rust (1192 votes), Edward Fellowes (1106) and John Moyer Heathcote (1106). This poll book lists those electors who voted, described as 'freeholders', although the county franchise included not only male freeholders of 40s a year, but also £10 copyholders and long-leaseholders, and £50 short-leaseholders and tenants. The names are arranged by parish or township, and the residence of each voter is given. Many of these freeholders did not live in the place from which they acquired the right to vote. Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of dissolutions of partnerships gazetted in England and Wales. The names of the partners are given in full, surnames in capitals, followed by trade and address, and date of the end of the partnership. Each entry usually ends with the phrase 'Debts by ...', indicating which partner intended to continue, and resume the responsibilities of, the business. "We may fairly ascribe the origin of the Society to the discovery, in the autumn of 1845, of the remains of Gundrada and De Warenne at Lewes Priory. That remarkable exhumation of the illustrious and long-buried dead, excited a deep and long-sustained interest, not only in the history of those noble personages, but also in the annals of the monastery they had founded, and in many cognate but hitherto much-neglected matters of research." By 1858 the membership had risen to about 550, and the tenth volume of Sussex Archaeological Collections had been published. Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of sequestrations of Scottish bankrupts' estates. The initial entry gives the name of the bankrupt (surname first, in capitals), trade and address; the dates and place of the stages of the sequestration process, and the date by which claims against the estate were to be lodged. This is the index to the names of the bankrupts, from the issues from January to December 1858: it also covers dissolutions of partnerships in Scotland, and the names of trustees, assignees, attorneys &c. mentioned in these Scottish cases.PAXTON. | Newcastle-upon-Tyne Voters: Freemen

In the general election of April 1859 the candidates for Newcastle-upon-Tyne the candidates were Thomas Emerson Headlam (H), George Ridley (R) and P. A. Taylor (T); the following June a poll was held to choose the Judge-Advocate General, the candidates being the Right Hon. T. E. Headlam (H) and William Cuthbert (C). This poll book lists all the voters, giving full name and address, and votes cast. The book is divided into two sections: freemen and householders. Within the householder section the names are arranged by parish or township: All Saints, Byker, Elswick, Heaton, Jesmond, St Andrew, St John, St Nicholas, and Westgate.PAXTON.
