English bankrupts could be dealt with in the provinces (Country) or London (Town). Town proceedings covered not only London but many provincial cases. The weekly Law Advertiser printed this Country Bankrupt Diary, detailing the progress of Country cases as they went through the various stages of hearings towards the surrender, realisation and distribution of the bankrupt's assets.PIERCEY. Petitioning Creditors and Solicitors
(1828-1829)
Principal creditors petitioning to force a bankruptcy (but often close relatives of the bankrupt helping to protect his assets). Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette was printed monthly for subscribers only, and included a section entitled Bankrupts, summarizing notices of bankruptcy proceedings. Volume 4, for 1829, covers bankruptcies gazetted from 2 December 1828 to 24 November 1829. The Gazette provided an index to the names of the principal bankrupts, but we have prepared this index to the names of the principal creditors, together with some stray names and solicitors from the records.

The 1851 census return for St George the Martyr, Southwark, registration district: London Road sub-district: enumeration district 7: described as: "Saint George's Road No 1 to 24 inclusive, including Saint Peter's Hospital - Temple Street (both sides) - Temple Gardens - Pitt Street (both sides) - Pitt Court - Elliotts Row (East side) to end of Parish." This area lay in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark, ecclesiastical district of St Jude. The addresses listed in the actual returns are St Peters Hospital, 1 to 24 St Georges Road, 1 to 39 Temple Street, 19 Temple Gardens, 1 to 51 Pitt Street, 1 to 5 Pitt Court and 1 to 32 Elliotts Row.
