Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the 34th foot). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, but from 1877-8 onwards there are also details of the issue of the medals. The 1st battalion was sent out to the East Indies in 1876, taking part in the Afghan war of 1878 to 1880.

(The sample scan is from the 34th foot). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, but from 1877-8 onwards there are also details of the issue of the medals. The 1st battalion was sent out to Bermuda in 1877, and on to Nova Scotia in 1880. The 2nd battalion returned to England from India in 1877, and was moved to Ireland in 1881.

The regiment was based in India throughout this period, and took part in the Afghan War 1878 to 1880 with the capture of Ali Musjid.
