The Indian Army and Civil Service List for July 1861 was printed by order of the Secretary of State for India in Council. Dating from after the reform of British rule in India in 1858, the one volume brings together lists of British military officers and civil officials. The regimental lists for the army in the three presidencies (Bengal, Madras and Bombay) are arranged as in any Army List of the period, giving officers by rank, with date of rank in the regiment and the army, and remarks. The native regiments had been reorganised and reduced from 174,237 of all ranks on 1 January 1859 to about 110,400 men in 1861. Each year just a handful of outstanding soldiers of the regiment were chosen for good conduct medals and gratuities: these are listed here. There were two lists, one for men recommended for the Good Conduct Medal without a gratuity, and one for gratuities - £5 to a private, £10 to a corporal, and £15 to a serjeant. | London Telephone Subscribers
(1939)
The London telephone directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the L to Z directory issued in May 1939, but also contains some names from earlier in the alphabet, for instance in the separate section for midwives. The London telephone districts comprised not only the city centre, but also the very extensive suburbs in the Home Counties (Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex).ROSAMOND.
