Wardhaugh Thompson 'many years an accomptant in London' published 'The Accomptant's Oracle; Or, Key to Science. Being a Treatise of Common Arithmetic: With the Doctrine of Vulgar and Decimal Fractions. Upon a Plan Entirely New. To which are added Decimal Tables, with their Use and Construction.' Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. On 7 October 1775 a loyal address of the 'Mayor, Burgesses, Clergy, Freeholders, and Inhabitants of the City of Bristol', 880 in all, was presented to king George III viewing 'with Astonishment the Conduct of a few disappointed Men, whose sophistical Arguments, and seditious Correspondences, have, in a great Measure, been the Occasion of deluding your American Subjects into open Rebellion', lamenting 'the Misfortune our American Brethren have brought upon themselves', and hoping 'that the Loyalty which prevails here, will soon convince our Fellow-Subjects in America of their Error, and bring them back to a just Sense of their Duty and Allegiance'. The address was presented to the king at St James's by fourteen gentlemen on the citizens' behalf, 'Which Address His Majesty was pleased to receive very graciously: And they all had the Honour to kiss His Majesty's Hand.'ROTHERY. The poll for the election of two citizens to serve in Parliament for the City and Liberty of Westminster was begun 7 September and ended 23 September 1780, the candidates being the Hon. Charles James Fox (F), Sir George Brydges Rodney, bart. (R), and the Right Hon. Thomas Pelham Clinton the Earl of Lincoln (L). In this poll book the names of all voters are given, by parish and within each parish by street, arranged alphabetically by surname and christian name, with the individual votes cast shown in the right hand columns. Pages 1 to 48 cover the parish of St George, Hanover Square; 49 to 100, St Martin; 101 to 134, St Clement and St Mary le Strand; 135 to 155, St Ann, Soho; 157 to 166, St Paul, Covent Garden; 167 to 170, St Martin le Grand; 171 to 224, St James; 225 to 274, St Margaret and St John.ROTHERY. His Majesty's ship the Goliath took part in the destruction of the French fleet in Aboukir Bay at the mouth of the Nile ('the Battle of the Nile') on the evening of the 1st and morning of the 2nd August 1798. This is the muster book for 1 October to 30 November 1798: being a continuation book in a series covering wages and victualling from December 1795, it also includes the names of some men who had died, deserted or been discharged from the ship from then to October 1798.
