Militia in Martock hundred, Somerset (1569) A muster of the ablemen, gunners, light horsemen, pikemen, archers and billmen available from this hundred, compiled by sir Hugh Paulet, sir Maurice Barkeley, sir Ralph Hopton and John Horner in answer to a royal commission of the 11th year of queen Elizabeth. Bury St Edmunds area testators and legatees (1370-1650) A number of wills proved and registered in the courts of Bury St Edmunds Commisary and Sudbury Archdeaconry were selected by Samuel Tymms 'more with a view to illustrate the peculiar customs and language of the period than the topology or genealogy of the district' and transcribed for publication by the Camden Society in 1850. Hertfordshire Sessions (1581-1700) Incidents from the Hertfordshire Sessions Rolls. These cover a wide range of criminal and civil business for the county, with presentments, petitions, and recognizances to appear as witnesses: many of the records concern the county authorities dealing with regulation of alehouses, religious conventicles, absence from church, highways, poaching, profanation of the Sabbath, exercising trades without due apprenticeship &c. Unlike the Sessions Books, the decisions of the justices are not recorded on the rolls, which serve more as a record of evidence and allegations. Where the date of a roll is given with an asterisk, it indicates that that particular document was not then in the county muniments, but in the archives of the Marquess of Salisbury (whose ancestors had served as Custos Rotulorum) at Hatfield House. This is a calendar of abstracts of extracts: it is by no means a completely comprehensive record of the surviving Hertfordshire sessions rolls of the period, but coverage is good. SAME. Cost: £4.00. Hertfordshire Sessions (1658-1700) Incidents from the Hertfordshire Sessions Books and Minute Books. These cover a wide range of criminal and civil business for the county: numerically, the the most cases (759) concerned not attending church; presentments about repairs to roads and bridges (247); unlicensed and disorderly alehouses (226); assault (156); badgers, higlers, &c., trading without licence (142); and trading without due apprenticeship (117). Apprentices registered in Somerset (1754) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Liverpool return. Masters of English Merchantmen at Antwerp (1845) The custom house at Antwerp issued daily reports of ships entering (aenkomsten) and departing (vertrekken) the harbour. For entrances the information recorded is the precise date, the nationality of the ship (eng./engelsch=English/British), the type of ship (bark=barque, brik=brig, goelet=galliot; jagt=yacht, stoomboot=steamer), the surname of the captain (k./kap.), whence, and brief note of the cargo. The departure information is much the same, but usually stating only whether in ballast or with a cargo (met lading). English ships formed a large part of the traffic, and almost all the steamers plying between Antwerp and London or Hull were registered in England. The reports, published in the newspaper Het Handelsblad der Stad en Provincie Antwerpen, and presumably based on handwritten originals, show a wide variation in spelling of the English names of both ships and masters. Inhabitants of Southwark in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St George the Martyr, Southwark, registration district: London Road sub-district: enumeration district 13: described as: "Johnston's Buildings - Obelisk Yard - Waterloo Road (east side) to Munroe's, end of Parish (West side) commencing at the Cabinet Maker's corner of Whiting St to Procters, end of Road - Duke St (north side) from Locksmith's to No 49 and Bale's Court." This area lay in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 4 Johnston's Buildings, 1 to 18 Obelisk Yard, 1 to 6 Obelisk Buildings, 1 to 15 James Terrace, 1 to 10 Brighton Place, 1 to 6 Haddow Place, 1 to 5 Oxford Place, 2 to 22, 34 to 36 and 81 to 85 Waterloo Road, 29 to 35 Oxford Terrace, The George, 1 to 5 Paget Place, 49 to 75 Duke Street, and 2 to 3 Bales Court. Cases in Queen's Bench (1883-1884) Volume 76 of The Law Times, 'The Journal of The Law and The Lawyers', a weekly publication, runs from 3 November 1883 to 26 April 1884. Much of the journal is taken up with law reports, leading articles, &c., and the 'Solicitors' Department' contains several regular features of great interest. The court lists enable us to follow the progress of cases scheduled to be heard in the high courts. Many of these cases never actually came to be heard, litigation ceasing whilst in preparation, or being resolved 'at the door of the court'. In almost all cases the parties are referred to by surname only. The lists of cases pending for trial or hearing in the Queen's Bench Division are sub-divided into 'New Trial Paper', 'Special Paper' and 'Crown Paper'. SAME. Cost: £6.00.
