In accordance with the Bankruptcy Act of 1883, notices received by the Board of Trade were gazetted in tabular form by the Inspector-General in Bankruptcy. At each stage the record gives the debtor's name, address (often including former addresses), description (i. e., occupation), the name of the court, and the sequential number of the matter in that court for the year. The tables of Receiving Orders additionally give Date of Order, Date of Petition and Date of Public Examination; notices of First Meeting give Date of Meeting, Hour and Place; Adjudications give Date of Order, Date of Petition, Name of Trustee (if appointed) and Address of Trustee; Notices of Intended Dividend give Last Day for Receiving Proofs, Name of Trustee, and Address; Notices of Dividends give Amount per Pound, When Payable, and Where Payable; Applications for Debtor's Discharge state the Day fixed for Hearing; and notices of Appointment of Trustees give the Trustee's Name, Address, and Date of Certificate of Appointment. Any one debtor would normally appear in a number of these tables as his or her case proceeded over the months. These are the notices gazetted in 1884.

The annual Dentists Register, 'Printed and Published under the Direction of The General Council of Medical Education and Registration of the United Kingdom, Pursuant to an Act Passed in the Year XLI & XLII Victoriæ, Cap. XXXIII, Entitled An Act to Amend the Law relating to Dental Practioners' included a section listing all current dental students. This gives full name (surname first, in capitals); preliminary examination in Arts, with date thereof; date of registration; place and date of commencement of medical or dental study, as certified by a master, or a teacher, or an official in a medical or dental school or hospital. In a few cases there is a dagger before the name: this indicates students from before 1 October 1885 (when it still was only optional) who took the subject of Elementary Mechanics.SHENNAN. Merchant Taylors' School was founded by members of the livery company of the merchant taylors of the city of London in 1561 as a grammar school. By the 19th century this was a major English public school. In 1875 the school removed from Suffolk Lane, in the City, to a new building in Charterhouse Square in Finsbury. In 1907 the Reverend William Baker, a former headmaster, published this school register for the period 1871 to 1900, which we have indexed by year of admission. Each entry gives the boy's name in full (surname, christian name(s)); date of birth; names of both parents (middle names as initials); occupation of father; career summary; and (in italics) address as of 1907.SHENNAN. | Ordinary Members of the Institute of Bankers

The Journal of the Institute of Bankers for 1904 includes a list of Fellows (from which this scan is taken: an asterisk indicates a Life Fellow), of Associates (an asterisk indicates a Life Associate, and a dagger a holder of the certificate of the institute), and of Ordinary Members; there are also results of the institute's final examinations held from 11 to 13 April, in which the successful candidates are listed alphabetically by surname and full christian name(s), with the name and address of their bank (not their personal addresses). These final examinations entitled the successful candidates to the Certificate of the Institute of Bankers; those who obtained distinctions are so indicated in the lists (an asterisk for Commercial Law, dagger for Arithmetic and Algebra, double dagger for Practical Banking, double s for Commercial Geography and History, and double vertical line for Political Economy). There was also an examination taken after the Gilbart Lectures, with successful candidates being awarded money prizes, or certificates of distinction, or honour, or merit, and similar lists of these awards were also printed in the journal.SHENNAN. Fettes College, Edinburgh, was opened in 1870 under the terms of a trust 'for maintenance, education, and outfit of young people whose parents have either died without leaving sufficient funds for that purpose, or who, from innocent misfortune during their own lives, are unable to give suitable education to their children'. In 1923 this edition of the Fettes College Register was published; in it the compilers sought to set out for each boy who had attended the college a brief synopsis of what was known about his time at the school, his subsequent career, and date and place of death, or address as of 1923. Of course, for most of the boys entering the school in the early 20th century, their career was still ahead of them. After each name there is a letter in brackets indicating the house to which the pupil belonged - (C.) Carrington House; (G.) Glencorse House; (K.) Kimmerghame House; (M.) Moredun House; (S.) Schoolhouse. An asterisk indicates that the boy was a foundationer, i. e. supported by the foundation; a dagger that he was a foundation scholar. VIA. indicates Upper Form; Mods. Modern School; Army Cl., Army Class; S. P., School Prefect; xx. First Rugby Football Twenty; xv. First Rugby Football Fifteen; xx. cap. Caps occasionally given to the five (or fewer) next to the First Fifteen after 1875; xi. First Cricket Eleven; viii. Gymnastic Eight; Trs. Prizes and Exhib., Trustees' Prizes and Exhibitions; Govs. Prizes and Exhib., Governors' Prizes and Exhibitions; Schol., scholarship; M., married. | Gardeners of Country Houses in Northamptonshire

The Horticultural Directory and Year Book was published for 57 years by the proprietors of the Journal of Horticulture, but for 1917 it was acquired by the Gardeners' Chronicle, and a complete revision was undertaken. 'In order to ensure the accuracy of the entries, enquiries were sent to every one of the many thousand persons whose names appeared in the lists. Nor did the work cease there, for in cases where no reply was received, a second enquiry, and in some instances even a third, was sent out. Inasmuch as the War has called many gardeners from their normal avocations, it was not possible to obtain information with respect to all the changes which occurred during the year, and particularly during the closing months. It became necessary, therefore, either to go to press with a certain number of unverified entries or to omit them altogether. After careful consideration, the latter course was adopted, and every unverified entry has been omitted.'
Pages 75 to 187 of the work are occupied by 'A County Directory of the Principal Gardens in Great Britain and Ireland, including Name of Proprietor, Gardener, and Post Town.' | Roll of Honour: London Teaching Staff

The London County Council published a 'Record of Service in the Great War 1914-1918 by Members of the Council's Staff' in 1922. This included a complete list, department by department, of the over 7000 staff who had served in the armed forces during the war, those dying while on active service being marked with an asterisk. The entries give full name, surname first, in bold, the years in uniform, any decorations, rank, and a brief description of theatre in which engaged. SHENNAN.
