The provincial banks of England and Wales made annual returns to the Stamp Office of their proprietors or shareholders. These returns, registered in March 1838, from the 103 banks then in existence, contain the full names and addresses of nearly 30,000 shareholders.TALLANT. London criminals and witnesses

Minutes of the evidence presented at the Central Criminal Court were recorded in shorthand by Henry Buckler. This volume covers the whole proceedings of the Queen's Commission of the Peace, Oyer and Terminer, and Gaol Delivery, for the City of London, and Gaol Delivery for the county of Middlesex and those parts of the counties of Essex, Kent and Surrey lying within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court, for the 7th to 12th sessions, from May to October 1839. The index covers both the accused and the witnesses (including police constables &c.) summoned to give evidence. The accused's name is given an asterisk if previously in custody; and a dagger if a 'known associate of bad characters'. Gentry in London
(1856)
The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well.TALLANT. Trainee Schoolmistresses at Whitelands
(1859)
The Education Department set examinations of trainee teachers at the various training colleges in Britain. This is the class list of the women who took examinations at the Teacher Training College at Christmas 1859. The names are given for the second year first, arranged by division in the examination (in order of merit for the first and second divisions), and then for the students of the first year, arranged similarly. Full names are given (with initials for middle names). The letter (D.) indicates that the candidate had obtained a certificate of competency as a teacher of drawing. An asterisk signifies that the candidate had received a prize for proficiency in drawing. The sample scan is from an Edinburgh list of trainee schoolmistresses.TALLANT. Members of the Royal Agricultural Society of England

The list of members of the Royal Agricultural Society gives names and addresses: life members are indicated by a dagger. (The names of 60 members were omitted on account of their subscriptions to the society being in arrear to 31 December 1859). This list is correct to June 1861; as of 11 December of that year there were 84 life governors, 95 annual governors, 1124 life members, 3399 annual members and 17 honorary members, making a total of 4719 names, mostly of landowners and agriculturists.TALLANT.  Outstanding soldiers of the 54th regiment of Foot
(1860-1870)
The 54th (The West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot embarked for India in 1857. It returned to England in 1866: the regimental depot was at Colchester. In 1868 the troops were sent to Ireland. Each year just a handful of outstanding soldiers of the regiment were chosen for good conduct medals and gratuities: these are listed here. There were two lists, one for men recommended for the Good Conduct Medal without a gratuity, and one for gratuities - £5 to a private, £10 to a corporal, and £15 to a serjeant. Both lists are indexed here, and each gives rank, name, regimental number, date of recommendation and date of issue. (The sample scan is from the 105th foot)TALLANT.
