The admission books for Leeds Grammar School from 1820 to 1900 were edited by Edmund Wilson and published in 1906. The series of registers is almost complete for the period, there being in addition admission registers for the Lower (or Commercial) Department from 1856 to 1865, and lists of boys in the school in 1856, and in the Commercial Department in 1861. The entries are arranged by date or term of admission: a sequential number is given first, then surname, christian name, and, after a dash, father's christian name, occupation, and address; another dash, and then the age of the boy at admission, and often his year of leaving (with the abbreviation r. for 'removed' or 'left'). r.* means left without notice; (o) or S. or Stranger or Foreigner indicates a boy not on the foundation. The editor was unable to divine the meaning of the abbreviation (Q) or the asterisks prefixed to most entries in 1856 to 1860, but dutifully copies them into the text. The Contagious Diseases Act of 1866 had as its first objective the establishment of isolation hospitals for the treatment of soldiers and sailors afflicted with smallpox, typhoid, measles, chicken pox, malaria, scarlet fever, bubonic plague, dysentery, enteric fever and other infectious conditions. This association was formed to lobby for the extension of the Act to the civil population of the United Kingdom. The membership was drawn not just from the medical profession and those interested in the administration of the poor law, but also from concerned individuals throughout society. | Science Schools and Classes: Elementary Examination: Class Lists

The Science and Art Department of the Committee of Council on Education published these class lists giving the names of all the successful candidates in the examination of science schools and classes taken in May 1869. The candidates were of three levels: honours; second stage or advanced examination; third stage or elementary examination. Twenty-three subjects were offered. These are the lists for the elementary examination. The tables, arranged subject by subject, give the candidate's full name (surname first), age, and occupation - or, in the case of those not yet of working age, father's occupation, preceded by (f.). Many candidates sat and were successful in more than one subject, and so appear in more than one list. The subjects are: I. Practical, Plane and Solid Geometry; II. Machine Construction; III. The New Zealand War Medal was awarded for service New Zealand campaign 1861 to 1866: this further progress report issued by the medal committee in Wellington 2 September 1871 lists officers and men of the colonial forces who had made application for the medal for services rendered prior to 31 December 1866, and whose claims had been admitted by the commissioners; as well as those whose claims had been rejected (with the reason); and also those officers and men included in the rolls formed by the late commissioners whose names also appear in the lists of those granted medals by the Imperial Government.THORP. This General Directory for Maidstone itself includes 'as a rule, those only who are private residents, or are engaged (as principals) in professional, mercantile, or trading pursuits'. The letters p. r., in italics, signify private residents.

Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (Wranglers, Senior Optimes and Junior Optimes), and within each class in order of score in the examination (the names of candidates with equal scores are bracketed together, with the word 'AEq.'). Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. Winners of Dr Smith's Mathematical Prizes are marked (1) senior, (2) for junior. The Greek letter alpha is affixed to the names of those students who had gained first class results in the Classical Tripos; beta to those entered in the second class; and gamma to those entered in the third class. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. Manchester Fat Cattle, Poultry and Dog Show took place at the Zoological Gardens, Belle Vue, from 22 to 24 December 1874. This comprised the Second Great Annual Exhibition of Fat Cattle, Sheep, Pigs, Roots, and Corn, and the Fourteenth Annual Exhibition of Poultry, Pigeon and Dogs; for which this single joint catalogue was issued. The full names and addresses of exhibitors (and, where appropriate, breeders) were given, both in a general directory and in the detailed class lists of exhibits. The exhibits in this section were divided into dorking; spanish; cochin china; bramah pootra; polish fowl; malay; creve coeur; houdan; game fowl; ducks; ornamental water fowl; geese; turkeys; extra stock; hamburgh; and bantams.THORP.
