Merchants, Bankers, Shipowners and Traders of London (1834) The public prints of December 1834 carried this loyal address to king William IV of merchants, bankers, shipowners, traders and others connected with the city of London, requesting 'permission at the present juncture to address your Majesty for the purpose of renewing the expression of our dutiful and loyal attachment to your Majesty’s person and crown. Deeply sensible of the practical blessings we have hitherto enjoyed under our wisely mixed constitution of King, Lords, and Commons, and feeling that the free and legitimate exercise of the Royal prerogative forms an integral part of that constitution (as essential to the maintenance of our own liberties as to the power and dignity of the Throne), we beg humbly to assure your Majesty of our determination steadfastly to uphold the same by every means in our power. 'Feeling, in common with all classes of your Majesty’s subjects, the deep importance of applying to all real abuses, wherever they may be found, a wholesome and timely correction, and of effecting in our excellent institutions every improvement of which careful examination and experience may prove them to be susceptible, we desire further dutifully to express our entire confidence that these useful purposes will ever occupy your Majesty’s paternal care. Nor can we permit ourselves to believe that the importance of these objects will be less apparent to those to whom the powers of government have been recently intrusted.' Minor offenders in Leicestershire (1834-1835) Justices of the Peace throughout England and Wales had the power of summary conviction for certain minor offences, principally vagrancy, poaching, petty theft, bastardy and assault. The magistrates' clerks for each district were required by Parliament to make a return of the names, offences, terms of imprisonment, and whether a written record was made of the proceedings, for the period from Michaelmas (29 September) 1834 to Michaelmas 1835. The return vary in completeness from magistrate to magistrate - the fullest returns also give the offender's address, the amount of fine or length of imprisonment, and/or the names of the justices. Inhabitants of Newington in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St Mary Newington, Surrey, registration district: St Peter Walworth sub-district: enumeration district 16: described as: "All that Part of the Parish of St. Mary Newington, which Comprises The North side of Walworth Common from Doctor Street to Queens Row, Queens Row (both sides), Elizabeth St. (both sides), & Phelp St. (both Sides)". This area lay in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth, and in the borough of Lambeth. HO 107/1567. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 7 Portland Place, Walworth Common; 1 to 25 Phelp Street (including Rowes Terrace); Phelps Cottages; Portland House, Walworth Common; 1 and 2 Devonshire Cottages, Walworth Common; 1 to 3 Portland Place; 1 to 17 Elizabeth Street, East Side; 1 to 14 Elizabeth Street, West Side; 1 to 14 Anns Terrace, Elizabeth Street; 1 to 4 Devonshire Place; Laurel Cottage; and 1 to 62 Queens Row (including Bricklayers Arms beerhouse and Pilgrim public house). Gentry in London (1856) The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well. WOOLETT. Maidstone Residents (1872) 'The Handy Directory and Guide for Maidstone and the Surrounding Villages within a Circle of Six Miles' was printed and published by W. S. Vivish. This General Directory for Maidstone itself includes 'as a rule, those only who are private residents, or are engaged (as principals) in professional, mercantile, or trading pursuits'.
