Insolvents in England and Wales
(1846) Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of insolvencies and stages in the process whereby the insolvents petitioned for release from debtors' prison. The insolvent is generally referred to by name (surname first), address and trade. This is the index to the names of the insolvents, from the issues from January to December 1846.RANKLEY. Gentry in London
(1856) The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well.RANKLEY. (1857) The returns from the Vestry and District Boards elected under the Metropolitan Local Management Act summarising the rates and expenditure for the year ending Lady Day 1857 include the 'Names of all Officers employed as Clerks, Surveyors, Collectors, Health Officers, Inspectors of Nuisances, and other Officers employed under such Vestry or District Board; setting forth the Offices they severally hold, with the Amount of Salary, Fees, Poundage, Perquisites, Value of House Rent, and others Benefits enjoyed by such Officers under any General or Local Act, or otherwise.'RANKLEY. Masters of Workhouses: London and Middlesex
(1863) Most Poor Law Unions maintained a workhouse. The Union List for 1863, arranged by counties and unions, and spread across facing pages, gives in the final columns the names of the masters of each workhouse, and the number of inmates. This number is the number fixed by the Poor Law Board. A few related institutions - Houses of Industry for Out-door Poor, Industrial Schools, Houses of Recovery, &c., are also included, and there are also some masters of workhouses outside the Poor Law Union system maintained by parishes under local acts, and in Gilbert's Incorporations.
